Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Math, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Physical Science, Operations Research, or Data Science, or equivalent experience, with 7+ years of progressive autonomy technologies experience including team leadership in a related industry; alternatively, a Master's degree and 5+ years of related engineering experience, or a Ph.D. degree and 2+ years working in a related engineering role.
  • Experience working in a team leadership role in a related industry.
  • A proven track record of leading proposals and winning contracts.
  • A proven track record of leading programs in the principal investigator role or similar experience.
  • Experience building and integrating software for edge platforms.
  • Experience with C/C++, Python, and project-specific required languages such as Java or Rust.
  • Experience assisting with non-technical programmatic priorities, including staff planning, budget estimation and tracking, and customer-facing interactions.
  • Background in robotics technologies related to motion planning, behavior modeling, or decision-making and their accompanying algorithms.
  • Experience with simulation tools and environments such as AFSIM and NGTS for validation, verification, and training.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a United States Department of Defense security clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Lead a team to develop solutions addressing technical challenges derived from customer requirements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in emerging mission autonomy technologies.
  • Support or lead marketing and proposal efforts in mission autonomy.
  • Support or lead managing and tasking the team to achieve program milestones.
  • Take primary responsibility for prime and customer-facing interactions.
  • Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in mission autonomy and related areas.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to advance research and development roadmaps.
  • Work at a desk or computer for prolonged periods and meet occasional physical requirements, including pushing, pulling, or lifting up to 15 pounds.
  • Travel occasionally when necessary.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence and machine learning standard libraries and tools.
  • Experience working in Linux-based development environments.
  • Experience working on classical autonomy and machine learning, including combining rule-based systems with learning-based methods such as reinforcement learning and generative methods to achieve resilient, adaptive behavior.
  • Experience developing software modules combining planning, decision-making, and behavior execution in dynamic, adversarial environments.
  • Experience implementing and testing behavior architectures such as multi-agent collaboration, target engagement, payload management, reconnaissance, and engagement in adversarial scenarios.
  • Ability to analyze mission logs to diagnose failures and optimize models for iterative development.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including technical writing skills.
  • Ability to identify and creatively solve complex problems.

May 27, 2026 Key additions strengthen Scientific Systems' ability to deliver advanced, mission-ready, multidomain autonomy for the warfighter Burlington, Mass., May 27, 2026 - Scientific Systems today announced the addition of three senior hires who will enhance the company's capacity to deliver advanced, multidomain autonomous capabilities in support of the warfighter. Leading this cohort is Dan "Animal" Javorsek, PhD, a recognized expert in autonomy for defense systems, who joins the company's leadership team as Chief Strategy Officer. He has previously held senior defense industry roles, following a distinguished career as an Air Force test pilot, senior leader, and DARPA program manager. Dr. Javorsek arrives at Scientific Systems following senior leadership roles in the defense technology sector, where he guided advanced autonomy, engineering, and innovation initiatives. His 24-year career with the U.S. Air Force culminated in his role as Commander of Detachment 6, Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC), Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., and as Director, F-35 United Operational Test Team (UOTT). Before assuming that command, Dr. Javorsek was a Program Manager in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Strategic Technology Office, leading research and development efforts in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to enable Mosaic Warfare and Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2). His blend of operational insight and technical expertise will play a crucial role in guiding the company's strategy for scalable, resilient, and collaborative autonomous systems across air, ground, maritime, and space domains.
