- A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
- Successful completion of an accredited medical assistant program, or certification as a Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, or Registered Medical Assistant, or eligibility to take the Certified Medical Assistant or Registered Medical Assistant examination with certification obtained within six months of hire.
- Basic Life Support certification is required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
- Knowledge of clinical skills required for medical assistant certification or registration.
- Effective problem-solving and prioritization skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, doctors, and other staff.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and process information confidentially.
- Ability to work independently and function as an integral team member with other healthcare professionals.
- Personal computer skills and ability to input and retrieve data from computerized systems.
- Ability to maintain positive customer service and establish effective working relationships with physicians, office staff, and employees in a team environment.
- Ability to perform work requiring sustained mental and visual concentration, considerable standing or walking, lifting objects weighing 20 pounds or less, and assisting with lifting and moving patients.
- Provide general nursing functions for the practice under a provider’s direction.
- Prepare patients for examinations, including patient assessments, medical histories, vital signs, medication reconciliation, and routine hearing or vision testing.
- Record vital signs and immunizations and provide initial patient assessments, concise patient histories, and clinical information and support to providers.
- Process, post, and accurately document information in patient charts.
- Maintain documentation standards and review charts before appointments to ensure requests and documents are in place.
- Educate patients and families about medications, treatments, care, referrals, and preparation instructions for tests and procedures.
- Administer treatments as requested by the physician.
- Obtain specimens for urine testing, phlebotomy, and other tests.
- Perform laboratory tests as directed by the physician.
- Set up and assist physicians with procedures such as laceration repair and Pap or pelvic examinations.
- Schedule outside tests or procedures, including X-ray and magnetic resonance imaging, in other departments or facilities.
- Coordinate admissions, referrals, prescription calls, and related patient needs.
- Stock examination rooms and conduct daily supply inventories, reporting items that need to be ordered.
- Assist with appointment scheduling in the electronic medical record system.
- Screen calls and determine urgency, appointment necessity, or whether telephone advice is sufficient.
- Assist with completing patient forms, including workers’ compensation and disability forms.
- Attend staff, educational, and other required meetings.
- Perform other related duties assigned by nurses, the practice manager, or physician.
- Electronic medical record experience is highly desirable.
