About The Role

We are excited about bringing in an experienced and motivated Head of Tax to join our fast-paced global Accounting and Finance team! The Head of Tax is responsible for establishing global tax strategies and processes while overseeing all aspects of tax compliance, including US Federal, State, property and international tax filings. This role is responsible for leading Zipline through its growth, international expansion and product launches.  

What You’ll Do

• Drive the implementation of global tax strategies including transfer pricing, while considering IP and manufacturing implications.   
• Evaluate and select a tax application that integrates with Zipline’s ERP system and satisfies customer requirements, while ensuring processes are sales tax compliant and will appropriately scale with the company’s growth. 
• Own all aspects of tax compliance, including US Federal, state and local filings that are prepared by an outside advisory firm.  Zipline operates in multiple global jurisdictions that require coordination with local accountants and firms to ensure timely and efficient filings.
• Oversee VAT tax issues on global purchases and transfers of property and equipment.  
• Coordinate with the accounting team on the preparation and review of property tax returns across multiple jurisdictions, including substantial fixed assets and equipment in multiple US taxable jurisdictions.  
• Review Zipline’s tax provision that is completed by an outside advisory firm.
• Assess and consider completing tax projects to maximize and protect tax assets, including net operating losses and R&D tax credits.
• Review, advise and provide guidance on tax issues with respect to 409A valuations, secondary transactions, and potential debt and equity transactions. 
• Collaborate with internal Zipline business partners, with substantial cross-functional teamwork with accounting, strategic finance, legal, product teams, and people team.
• Own tax relationships with external providers, including transfer pricing, global tax compliance, tax provisions and special projects as needed.  Current providers include Big 4 and local firms with a significant presence in North America and Africa.  
• This position will be the company’s first tax hire, with the expectation that this person will lead and build a global tax team as Zipline grows. 

What You’ll Bring

• 15+ years of progressive experience in tax
• You are rolling your sleeves up as well as providing strategic direction on tax matters
• Experience working in operationally complex businesses, preferably with international experience. 
• Excited about working for a transformative company.
• Experience in both public accounting and at a company that has gone through significant growth.
• Comfortable working in highly global and cross-functional environments and able to navigate seamlessly between different functions, cultures and perspectives.
• Excellent verbal and written communication necessary to build strong relationships with Zipline teams.
• Ability to navigate ambiguity and make decisions in a fast-paced environment.
• Solid knowledge of financial statements, accounting principles and financial analysis.
• Ability to periodically travel internationally. 

What Else You Need to Know

This role will be a hybrid role based in our South San Francisco HQ.

The starting cash range for this role is $170,000 - $210,000. Please note that this is a target, starting cash range for a candidate who meets the minimum qualifications for this role. The final cash pay for this role will depend on a variety of factors, including a specific candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, working location, and projected impact. The total compensation package for this role may also include: equity compensation; discretionary annual or performance bonuses; sales incentives; benefits such as medical, dental and vision insurance; paid time off; and more.
