Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development credential is required.
  • Successful completion of a training course in the theory and practice of hemodialysis is required.
  • Successful completion of the Staff Assisted Home Hemodialysis Employee Training and Orientation Program is required.
  • Successful completion of cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification is required.
  • Successful completion of dialysis certification is required as applicable.
  • At least two years of hemodialysis experience is required.
  • The ability to assist with lifting patients and equipment is required.
  • The ability to provide coverage at area facilities during short staffing or as required is required.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • The employee must be able to perform frequent, prolonged standing, bending, heavy lifting, patient movement, and ambulation assistance.
  • The employee must complete the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment.
  • The employee may be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases or materials.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care for assigned patients according to physician orders and state nurse practice laws under registered nurse supervision.
  • Arrive at assigned nursing locations and inquire about each patient's wellbeing since the previous treatment.
  • Prepare and test water and dialysis equipment, and document required testing.
  • Participate in process improvement activities supporting quality enhancement goals.
  • Record pre- and post-treatment observations, weight, vital signs, and treatment parameters.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, sodium modeling, and ultrafiltration modeling for registered nurse review and approval.
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and observe vascular access patency under registered nurse supervision and as permitted by state law.
  • Administer heparin according to physician orders under registered nurse supervision and as permitted by state law.
  • Monitor and assist with dialysis treatment, including treatment time, blood flow, and dialysate flow.
  • Observe patients and conduct machine safety checks during treatment.
  • Monitor vascular access and arterial and venous pressures during treatment.
  • Ensure treatment safety alarms, including the air detector and narrow venous limits, are enabled.
  • Document treatment information on the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and, when applicable, in progress notes.
  • Inquire about intradialytic problems and monitor patients' responses to dialysis therapy.
  • Provide prescribed or directed interventions and document patient responses.
  • Obtain vital signs before treatment termination and perform and document discontinuation procedures.
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures.
  • Observe the patient's condition and vascular access before treatment termination, including standing and sitting blood pressure.
  • Obtain hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings.
  • Observe the patient after treatment termination.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and prepare specimens for transport to Spectra laboratories.
  • Report significant information, changes in patient condition, and unusual findings to the nurse supervisor or Home Therapy Program Manager.
  • Comply with the Code of Business Conduct, company policies and procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Assist with projects assigned by the direct supervisor and perform other assigned duties.
  • Travel to and from nursing home facilities within a defined geographic location.
