Requirements
  • 7+ years experience as a software engineer
  • 4+ years of recent experience with React, JavaScript/TypeScript, and Ruby
  • At least one year of experience building products and services within the VA.gov ecosystem, ideally involving digital forms
  • Expertise with the VA Design System
  • Demonstrated self-management and ownership of your work
  • Demonstrated history of bringing a combination of initiative, pragmatism, creativity and tenacity to solve hard problems
  • Ability to work independently on high complexity tasks, and to collaborate as it makes sense for the problem and the work
  • Deep understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1, Section 508) and automated testing tools (Cypress, Playwright, axe, pa11y)
  • Thrive in Agile, self-organizing environments focused on team success
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team, including research, design, engineering, and product
  • Has lived and worked in the United States for 3 out of the last 5 years
  • Some travel may be required
Responsibilities
  • This role centers on crafting components, generating PDFs, and integrating with back-end APIs, using various frameworks and architectures to thoughtfully integrate advanced features. This is a hands-on coding role where you can expect to use React and Ruby.
  • In this role, you’ll work with small, fast-working team that will leverage AI and other innovative tools and workflows, along with systems thinking and a willingness to explore alternative approaches, to improve the design, implementation, and deployment of digital forms.
  • You will use your experience with front-end frameworks and the VA ecosystem to solve technical challenges, design effective solutions, troubleshoot production issues, and improve system performance.
  • You’ll apply your experience to make informed architectural decisions, using design patterns and best practices to maintain quality through code reviews and metrics.
  • Your experience with the VA.gov ecosystem as well as exposure to other systems will help you make effective choices for architecture and scalability, supporting smoother workflows and enhancing the development process.
  • You will bring experience with security best-practices to ensure that PII is handled responsibly and securely, implement secure data collection, transmission, storage, and access controls, proactively identify and mitigate risks, and champion privacy compliance throughout the development lifecycle.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with vets-json-schema
  • Experience designing PDF/JSON outputs; familiarity with the PDFFill library
  • Node.js or Python for workflow service APIs
  • Proficiency with Cypress or Playwright integrated into CI/CD pipelines
  • Development experience in cloud environments (AWS, Azure)
  • Expertise in CI/CD systems (GitHub Actions, Jenkins)
  • Experience experimenting with and/or utilizing AI tools and services to create and deliver software, and a strong willingness to leverage AI where appropriate to improve outcomes
  • You are a U.S. Veteran
