Requirements
- Satisfactory completion of a 24-month course in radiology technology and a 12-month course in radiation therapy technology; or satisfactory completion of a 24-month course in radiation therapy technology; or being a registered nurse who has satisfactorily completed a 12-month course in radiation therapy technology; or satisfactory completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in radiation therapy.
- One year of clinical training in radiation therapy.
- Current licensure as required by state or national authority and/or certification or board eligibility in radiation therapy by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology.
- Maintain American Registry of Radiologic Technology certification in radiation therapy with a minimum of 12 documented hours of continuing education.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures involved in operating ionizing radiographic and radiation therapy equipment.
- Knowledge of human anatomy and proper patient positioning to provide prescribed treatment.
- Ability to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a medical emergency.
Responsibilities
- Apply ionizing radiation to pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients according to the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist under the general supervision of the Chief Therapist.
- Deliver the prescribed planned course of radiation therapy accurately with minimal supervision.
- Check the prescription, diagnosis, chart, and patient identification.
- Explain the procedure, communication methods during treatment, and emergency procedures to patients, and reinforce the Radiation Oncologist's advice regarding treatment reactions and care.
- Prepare the treatment room and equipment according to the prescription, including immobilization devices, field size, treatment distance, and lead protection devices.
- Transfer patients safely to the treatment couch, giving special care to catheters and intravenous drips.
- Check daily treatment time and deliver the prescribed dose while maintaining visual and audible communication with the patient.
- Maintain patient markings, observe patients for unusual reactions or events, and report accurate information to nursing staff and/or the Radiation Oncologist.
- Observe radiation safety measures for patients and personnel.
- Perform simulations.
- Assist with tumor localization procedures and preparation of immobilization devices.
- Assist with dosimetry procedures, including prescription calculations.
- Obtain weekly port films and present them at chart rounds for review by Radiation Oncology staff.
- Assume weekly on-call status on a rotating basis for Duke staff therapists.
- Perform and document daily accelerator warm-up and quality-assurance procedures.
- Maintain daily treatment records and other records required for departmental quality-assurance and quality-improvement activities.
- Perform mold-room duties.
- Secure and maintain supplies.
- Secure X-ray and laboratory reports as needed.
- Report erratic equipment operation to the Chief Radiation Therapist, Radiation Physicist, and/or Medical Engineer.
- Participate in departmental performance-improvement activities.
- Assist in hiring and orienting new personnel.
- Attend weekly quality-assurance rounds, monthly therapy meetings, and educational in-services.
- Incorporate department and hospital policies and procedures into patient care.
