Requirements
  • A high school diploma with accounting coursework is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including formulas, PivotTables, data validation, and advanced spreadsheet organization, is required.
  • Ability to learn and apply Generally Accepted Auditing Standards, statutory requirements, and standard audit methodologies is required.
  • Ability to interpret tax codes and exercise limited professional judgment in their application is required.
  • Ability to independently perform Tier 1 audits and support collaborative audit engagements is required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required to clearly convey relevant findings and information.
  • Strong arithmetic skills, attention to detail, and sound mathematical reasoning are required.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, external organizations, and the public is required.
  • Ability to identify non-standard situations and develop appropriate recommendations for resolving issues is required.
  • The employee must successfully complete and maintain required state or departmental physical standards and certifications.
  • The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, move, or position items weighing up to 30 pounds with or without assistance.
Responsibilities
  • Train in audit procedures and methodology, including standards, statutory requirements, and workpaper preparation.
  • Interpret and apply City and State tax codes, rules, and regulations.
  • Schedule, plan, and conduct entry-level Tier 1 sales and use tax audits and compliance reviews of financial records.
  • Assist with and train on more complex audits under direct supervision.
  • Prepare and maintain workpapers, schedules, supporting documentation, and audit reports supporting audit findings and conclusions.
  • Provide taxpayer education, including presentations at tax workshops.
  • Develop professional judgment in identifying and quantifying tax compliance issues and recommending audits or other corrective actions.
  • Calculate assessments or refunds and prepare written audit findings.
  • Assist Taxpayer Services with support duties as needed.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • Experience in auditing or applied accounting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles is preferred.
  • Municipal government experience is desirable.
