Requirements
  • A high school diploma or GED is required, unless working under a student permit.
  • The candidate must be certified by the Indiana State Department of Health as a Certified Nursing Assistant in good standing; out-of-state CNAs and graduating CNA students may work for 120 days while awaiting Indiana certification.
  • The candidate must have basic computer skills and knowledge of programs such as Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.
  • The candidate must thoroughly understand the principles of safe and effective nursing practices within the State of Indiana.
  • The candidate must assist licensed nurses with procedures within the nurse aide's scope of practice.
  • The candidate must follow written and verbal instructions, function independently, and make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.
  • The candidate must demonstrate personal integrity and deal tactfully with residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and personnel.
  • The candidate must work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
  • The candidate must exercise judgment in prioritizing tasks, duties, and responsibilities according to established standards, policies, and procedures.
  • The candidate must protect confidential information, comply with Compliance and HIPAA requirements, and maintain discretion.
  • The candidate must demonstrate patience, a cheerful disposition, enthusiasm, and willingness to handle residents according to their maturity and physical functioning level.
  • The candidate must adhere to a professional code of ethics.
  • The candidate must relay information concerning a resident's condition to appropriate staff members.
Responsibilities
  • Assist residents with bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, skin care, grooming, nail care, and dressing needs.
  • Feed residents, provide bedside water and snacks, and transfer residents to and from dining areas according to the nutritional plan of care.
  • Answer resident call lights and respond to requests for assistance promptly and according to facility policy.
  • Maintain resident rooms by making beds or changing bed linens, cleaning bedside tables, and organizing personal belongings as needed.
  • Observe and report unusual changes in residents' appetite, skin condition, or behavior according to facility policy.
  • Offer emotional support and actively listen to residents to help them develop trust and achieve independence in daily living.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of residents and their care to protect resident rights and privacy.
  • Document vitals, assistance, and other care provided in medical records according to facility policy.
  • Comply with safety requirements and infection-control measures while maintaining a clean work environment.
