Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent and one year of closely related clinical experience or training in optometry, ophthalmology, or a related field are required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Gather necessary information for the physician, perform initial patient screening and assessment, and perform diagnostic testing required to care for patients with eye-related problems and subspecialty needs.
  • Obtain, perform, or check ocular history, vital signs, visual acuity, spectacle neutralization, automated refractions, pupillary examinations, confrontational fields, ocular motility, and intraocular pressure.
  • Perform diagnostic testing, including basic color vision screening with Ishihara or HRR plates, automated visual field testing, Humphrey Visual Field testing, corneal topography, Orbscan measurements, and pachymetry.
  • Insert and remove contact lenses and teach patients contact lens insertion, removal, and care techniques.
  • Perform specialized visual acuity testing using a potential acuity meter, laser interferometry, and brightness acuity tester.
  • Perform clinical-clerical office duties, including scheduling, requesting forms, printing results, ordering contact lenses, and completing related administrative activities.
  • Stock rooms according to practice needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • Knowledge of ocular anatomy and physiology, basic tonometry, ophthalmic equipment maintenance, and simple repairs.
  • Understanding of ocular injuries and urgent care.
  • Basic knowledge of ocular pharmacology, including drops and medications used for eye examinations, their purposes, proper administration, dosage, durations, common side effects, and hospital shelf-life policies.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification upon hire.
  • Certification by the registry of the Joint Commission of Allied Health in Personnel Ophthalmology or another nationally recognized professional certifying body upon hire.
