Bungie needs new game greenlit after Destiny 2 shutdown and 400 layoffs, not just Marathon

Bungie faces an uncertain future following 400 layoffs, with its most crucial next step being approval of a new game project beyond Marathon, according to industry analysis. Whilst Marathon development continues, the studio currently has no other greenlit projects despite years of pitching new titles, including potential Destiny IP spin-offs. Sony's Herman Hulst acknowledged the studio is working on "incubation efforts for future projects", though any approved game would require years of development with smaller teams. The concern is that Bungie may pursue another live service title rather than returning to the single-player and co-op content that defined Halo and Destiny's success. Marathon alone cannot sustain the studio long-term. Sony must decide whether to invest in a significant new title or risk closure of one of gaming's most influential shooter developers.

Bungie lays off 292 employees in Bellevue after Destiny 2 update falls short

Bungie, the Bellevue-based video game studio, has laid off 292 employees following disappointing performance of its "Destiny 2" update. The cuts primarily affected staff working on the Destiny series and a small number on the Marathon game. All impacted employees worked at Bungie's Bellevue location, with layoffs effective from 9 July. Most positions eliminated were video game engineers, producers and designers. This marks the company's third round of layoffs in three years. Bungie stated the workforce reduction was necessary to "best position the studio" for the future, acknowledging Destiny 2 fell short of expectations. The studio, which created the iconic Halo franchise under Microsoft ownership, was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment for $3.6 billion in 2022.

Bungie plans layoffs as Destiny 2 ends, no immediate Destiny 3 in development

Bungie is not immediately developing Destiny 3 and is planning layoffs, according to Bloomberg. Sources told reporter Jason Schreier that the studio has no specific project greenlit for the Destiny 2 development team following today's announcement that the game will cease receiving live service content updates. The studio will instead invest more in Marathon, its extraction shooter that launched earlier this year but hasn't met sales expectations. Bungie plans to add a casual PvE mode to attract more players. Bungie has struggled with new projects recently. In 2024, the company laid off over 200 employees after cancelling Destiny spin-off Payback. Today's announcement stated Bungie will "begin work incubating" its next games, though any future Destiny title appears far off.

Sony backs Marathon despite $765M Bungie impairment losses

Sony has revealed an additional $565 million in impairment losses for Bungie, bringing the total to $765 million since acquiring the studio for $3.6 billion. The impairment losses reflect a downward adjustment of Bungie's perceived value rather than direct financial losses. Despite this, Sony publicly backed Bungie's struggling extraction shooter Marathon, citing an 82 Metacritic score and 90% positive Steam reviews. However, the game continues losing players since launch, with numbers approaching those of 11-year-old Destiny 2 on PC. Sony projects these impairment losses will be absent or significantly reduced by fiscal year 2026. The company plans to improve Marathon through additional content and gameplay enhancements. Notably, Destiny 2 went unmentioned in Sony's earnings discussion, raising concerns about the franchise's future direction.

Marathon earns $50M against $200M+ budget despite positive reviews

Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon has generated approximately $50-55 million in sales since launch, according to analytics firm Alinea, figures that sources confirmed are close to actual numbers. The game cost between $200-300 million to develop over five years. Despite an 89% positive rating on Steam, where 70% of players are based, Marathon's 88,000 concurrent peak represents a significant shortfall. Only 20% of players are on PlayStation. The game has sold roughly 1.2 million copies, far below successful launches like Helldivers 2's 12 million in 12 weeks or ARC Raiders' 14 million in four months. Whilst many players have invested 50-100 hours in the two weeks since launch, daily active users dropped 20% weekend-to-weekend. The game faces ongoing costs as a live service requiring continuous content development.
