  • An Associate’s degree, vocational technical degree, or specialized training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college education, with emphasis in business, code enforcement, law enforcement, or a closely related field.
  • More than three years and up to and including five years of experience.
  • A valid state driver’s license.
  • Animal Control certification, with possible additional certifications as required by the department head.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to perform medium-to-heavy work involving walking, standing, stooping, lifting, climbing, pushing, or raising objects; exert 20 to 50 pounds of force recurrently and 50 to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to perform routine keyboard operations.
  • Ability to read technical instructions, procedures, manuals, and charts; compose routine and specialized reports, forms, and business letters; and speak using normal grammar and word form.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise animal control activities and subordinate Animal Care Officers, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Instruct subordinates, coordinate daily work schedules, maintain standards, allocate personnel, address employee problems, and recommend employee discipline.
  • Assist in interviewing and selecting Animal Care Officers and establishing their guidelines and procedures.
  • Initiate risk-management protocols for injured Animal Care Officers, including processing First Report of Injury and Safety Analysis forms.
  • Review subordinate work for completeness and accuracy, evaluate performance, recommend improvements, and provide training, advice, and assistance.
  • Respond to public complaints and requests for assistance regarding animal-control problems, dispatching calls to officers as required.
  • Supervise and participate in daily activities, including capturing and transporting stray and unwanted animals.
  • Respond to and provide field backup and emergency assistance to officers, including after regular working hours.
  • Inspect commercial breeder premises and recommend approvals for commercial breeder licenses.
  • Coordinate problem resolution with the public and other departments; investigate complaints associated with department personnel and activities and report findings to the supervisor.
  • Investigate animal-cruelty cases, enforce related laws, assist law-enforcement personnel with animal-related situations, issue warnings and citations, and interpret animal-care ordinances.
  • Prepare warrants and testify in court as needed.
  • Provide public education regarding animal control and explain ordinances concerning the care and keeping of animals.
  • Compile data and prepare departmental, County, and agency records and reports.
  • Monitor inventory for daily operations.
  • Operate vehicles, traps, restraining and capture devices, two-way radios, hand tools, telephones, and other assigned equipment safely.
  • Perform clerical and administrative duties, including assisting customers, preparing forms and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, answering telephones, copying, and filing.
  • Attend training, meetings, and workshops to maintain job knowledge, skills, and required certifications.
  • Perform dispatching duties when necessary.
  • Work on call 24 hours.
