Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required for the Certified Medical Assistant pathway.
  • Completion of an accredited medical assisting program is required for the Certified Medical Assistant pathway; one year of patient experience is preferred.
  • Certification through American Medical Technologist, American Association of Medical Assistants, National Healthcareer Association, Medical Career Assessments, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant, or National Center for Competency Testing is required for the Certified Medical Assistant pathway.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification is required for the Certified Medical Assistant pathway.
  • Graduation from a recognized Licensed Practical Nursing program is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse pathway.
  • A current South Carolina Licensed Practical Nurse license or compact-state license is required for the Licensed Practical Nurse pathway.
  • A current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification or American Red Cross Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification is required.
  • The role requires the ability to perform duties while standing, walking, and sitting; bend, kneel, climb stairs, reach in all directions, use both hands and legs, and perform repetitive motions.
  • The role requires physical qualification for respirator use, corrected vision of 20/40, the ability to recognize objects at near and far distances, and the ability to work in a latex-safe indoor environment.
  • The role requires frequently lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, or carrying approximately 50 pounds unassisted and exerting up to 50 pounds of force; lifting 25 pounds from 36 inches to overhead is also required.
  • The role may infrequently require working in dusty areas and confined or cramped spaces.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure accurate calibration, cleaning, and scheduled maintenance of clinical and laboratory equipment as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Department of Health and Environmental Control, and UMA, with activities tracked through documentation.
  • Maintain and review patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, and communicate information as appropriate.
  • Document test and examination results.
  • Communicate the plan of care to patients and formally develop patient education materials when necessary.
  • Maintain examination-room supplies, instruments, and cleanliness of the patient-care environment as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Department of Health and Environmental Control, and UMA.
  • Maintain timely patient flow and assist with scheduling appointments and referrals based on urgency and availability.
  • Screen patients for appropriate information and provide patient education appropriate to diagnosis and treatment.
  • Observe, record, and report patients' physical and psychosocial conditions and reactions to medications and treatments to physicians.
  • Respond to and triage phone calls.
  • Call in orders appropriately as ordered by physicians.
  • Instruct patients, as ordered by physicians, regarding treatment and medication.
  • Monitor and distribute medications, including samples and controlled substances.
  • Triage patients and prepare them for physician examinations and procedures.
  • Assist with examinations, procedures, and treatments as necessary.
  • Instruct patients in the collection of samples and completion of tests.
  • Administer prescribed treatments and tests as ordered by physicians.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of patient experience is preferred for the Certified Medical Assistant pathway.
