Requirements
  • An education background generally equivalent to a high school education is required.
  • One year of directly related experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry is required, or graduation from an accredited Ophthalmic Technician program.
  • Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • The employee must work day shifts Monday through Friday, with no weekends or holidays.
Responsibilities
  • Perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review, including visual acuity, history taking, tonometry, lensometry, motility, pupil assessment, visual fields, simple color vision tests, and possibly refraction.
  • Examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber using a slit lamp and note variations from normal.
  • Administer dilation or anesthetic drops as directed.
  • Assist patients with contact lens insertion and removal training.
  • Clean and stock examination and procedure rooms and maintain the physical environment.
  • Maintain supplies of sample drug medications and assist with ordering medical and office supplies.
  • Prepare contaminated instruments and equipment for transport to sterilization.
  • Facilitate equipment calibration, maintenance, and monitoring.
  • Assist with appointments and telephone call screening.
  • Answer phones, take messages, and relay information to appropriate individuals.
  • Call pharmacies for prescription refills under physician direction and record prescriptions in patient charts.
  • File test results, forms, and letters in medical records.
  • Interact courteously with patients, visitors, and personnel and maintain patient and coworker confidentiality.
  • Maintain required competencies, identify learning needs, and pursue appropriate professional development.
  • Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.
