The opportunity:
We have an exciting new opportunity for a Marine & Energy Liability Senior Underwriter to join the team in London. Markel Wholesale division is comprised of three underwriting divisions (Professional, Financial Risks & Cyber, marine & Energy & Specialty), as well as an award winning claims team, underwriting support, delegated underwriting, and strategic business development. We have staff around the world with a significant presence in Asia and the US, in addition to the London market.
Our teams operate as ‘One Wholesale’, working together towards our goal to be one of the world’s great speciality insurers. We work collaboratively both within Wholesale and across the wider Markel organisation, and because we work as one we are able to create the best solutions possible for our clients, and provide exceptional development opportunities for our staff.
The Marine & Energy Liability team is a significant department of the Specialty division. We are a recognised market-leader with strong client relationships around the world built on a high level of service to strategic brokers.
What you’ll be doing:
Underwrite and manage a portfolio of marine and energy liability risks according to Markel’s underwriting principles and in line with authority limits
Manage your own book of business in line with appetite and strategy, including combined ratio targets
Understand and promote collaborative interaction with claims and other internal functions to develop policy wordings and coverage
Analyse and interpret data to enhance Markel’s underwriting capabilities
Develop strong relationships with new and existing brokers and clients
Our must haves:
Extensive Marine & Energy Liability underwriting expertise
Experience of working for a Lloyd’s Syndicate or London market insurance company
Previous underwriting within an international Marine & Energy Liability book
Experience of operating as part of a leading Underwriter team
Excellent technical knowledge of underwriter assessment, wording and rating requirements
Established relationships with London market and overseas brokers
Strong broker and client-facing experience and ability
