Requirements
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in civil engineering technology and three years of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a master's degree from an accredited college in civil engineering.
  • A valid New York State Professional Engineer's License and four years of full-time experience in civil engineering. A master's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college will be accepted as equivalent to one year of the full-time experience in civil engineering.
  • To be considered for Civil Engineering I-III, TA Applicants must be in a permanent civil service status in the title(s) of Job Title or be on an established list for said title(s). If you are on an established list, your list number must be reachable to be considered for appointment.
  • Special Note: In addition to above qualification requirements, to be eligible for placement in Assignment Levels II and III, individuals must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project.
  • A Motor Vehicle Driver’s License valid in the State of New York may be required for certain assignments. If required, this license must be maintained for duration of appointment.
Responsibilities
  • Be part of the Structural Inspection group and inspect concrete and steel to ensure that the system infrastructure is safe for use.
  • Perform comprehensive, up-close inspection of various New York City Transit structure types.
  • Maintain a status and recommended action database.
  • Analyze defects and prepare designs and repair plans.
  • Supervise testing on-site and prepare recommendations for alterations or repairs.
  • Analyze report data, perform cost estimates, and prepare scopes of work and project profiles for repair work with in-house forces, vendor contracts and/or capital programs in the Infrastructure Engineering subdivision.
  • Provide technical guidance and administrative direction to Subway Nights Structural Inspection Program to comply with mandated inspections of Subway Tunnels, Under River Tubes, Retaining Walls, and Underground Stations; provide technical training to subway inspection teams to improve structural inspections.
  • Respond to trouble calls and emergencies related to structural conditions.
  • Overtime will be paid for the off-hours shifts.
  • This position has a night-to-overnight shift.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of MS Office suite and internet and mobile applications, as well as Micro Station and nonconformity databases.
  • Knowledge of structural inspection of concrete and steel.
  • Ability to read and write technical drawings and correspondence.
  • In-depth knowledge of construction design and code issues covering multiple city agencies.
