Requirements
  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, or a related discipline with a minimum of 6 years of related work experience; or a Master's degree in a similar discipline with a minimum of 4 years of related work experience; or a PhD in a similar discipline with a minimum of 2 years of related work experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of user experience research methods, including methods for augmented reality and virtual reality.
  • Understanding of Web, augmented reality, and virtual reality design best practices.
  • Understanding of artificial intelligence ethical implications, uses, technologies, and potential.
  • A portfolio of design projects showing a strong human-centered approach based on research.
  • Experience organizing and moderating both individual research sessions and group research.
  • A strong grasp of research methods and both quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
  • Storyboarding, wireframing, mockup, and prototyping skills.
  • Understanding of Agile Scrum practices and philosophies.
  • Software development skills for prototyping and front-end production purposes.
  • Experience creating artificial-intelligence-driven science interpretation applications, agents, or technologies.
  • Experience designing training programs or content and understanding didactic methodologies.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating the ability to solve complex problems using design methodology and communicate complex information in clean, simple ways.

Responsibilities
  • Perform requirements discovery, refinement, and validation.
  • Uncover, identify, and communicate new use cases for the technologies.
  • Design interactions and interfaces for software.
  • Design processes and procedures for human workflows.
  • Provide support and onboard new users.
  • Demonstrate the product to new teams and drive adoption through continuous improvement.
  • Perform information architecture, service design, and operations testing.
  • Educate partners on appropriate uses of artificial intelligence and data science for their context.
  • Plan change management and processes to help expert users adopt new ways of operating seamlessly.
  • Design and implement clear training programs and content.
  • Design and implement internal communications products that explain complex concepts to specialized audiences.
  • Discover and define the real problem to be solved on behalf of the mission or project.
  • Design short- and long-term research studies to answer key questions.
  • Develop research materials, including scripts and low-fidelity prototypes.
  • Conduct research, independently or with assistance, on existing tools, workflows, behaviors, features, and user needs.
  • Identify unmet user needs and development opportunities.
  • Help the team prioritize and define the development roadmap.
  • Write and present findings to the team.
  • Design, prototype, validate, and refine solutions identified as having merit.

Loft Orbital to deploy NASA JPL's AI software for real-time Earth disaster monitoring

Loft Orbital has secured an agreement with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to host and demonstrate AI software on its space infrastructure. The collaboration, part of JPL's Federated Autonomous MEasurement project funded by NASA's Earth Science Technology Office, will advance on-orbit AI capabilities for Earth science remote sensing. Flight demonstrations began in June 2026, with additional deployments scheduled through 2028. JPL's AI software aims to reduce data latency by processing information in near-real time, delivering urgent insights on wildfires, flooding and natural disasters to emergency responders. The spacecraft will demonstrate autonomous tip-and-queue tasking without ground intervention using intersatellite links. Founded in 2017, Loft Orbital has flown over 25 missions and operates facilities in San Francisco, Colorado and Toulouse, France.
