Requirements
  • Completion of a Licensed Practical Nurse program, Surgical Technology program, or Registered Nurse program, or a high school diploma or equivalent with two years of previous scrub experience.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Be capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Be able to lift up to 40 pounds and push or pull heavily loaded carts up to 200 pounds.
  • Possess visual, hearing, and oral acuity, manual dexterity, and technical ability.
  • Be able to wear lead for extended periods.
  • Respond to call assignments within 30 minutes.
  • Complete annual education related to specialty accreditation when applicable.
Responsibilities
  • Provide intraoperative care by functioning as the scrub person assisting the surgical team during operative procedures.
  • Use quality aseptic technique in sterile and unsterile operating-room roles.
  • Assist the circulating registered nurse in monitoring operating-room technique and maintaining a sterile field.
  • Perform sponge, instrument, and needle counts with the circulating registered nurse.
  • Assist with gowning and gloving surgeons and positioning equipment and instruments.
  • Pass sterile instruments to the surgical team during procedures.
  • Assist with patient transportation and positioning, including holding retractors and positioning operative limbs under the surgeon's direction.
  • Prepare supplies and equipment for surgical procedures according to preference cards.
  • Assist with sterilization and maintenance of sterile and non-sterile supplies and equipment.
  • Monitor inventory, order and restock supplies, instruments, and equipment.
  • Remove outdated items and discard or reprocess them according to established guidelines.
  • Assist with general department cleaning duties.
  • Perform assigned equipment checks.
  • Assist with recording patient charges.
  • Provide surgical assistance during cardiac and thoracic surgery cases.
  • Provide specialized surgical assistance during procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypass and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support.
  • Provide surgical assistance during left ventricular assist device procedures and heart transplants.
