Broadcom surges 36% in 6 months, outpacing Nvidia on ASIC chip demand

Broadcom has outpaced Nvidia with a 36% return over the past six months, driven by growing demand for custom-made ASIC chips. The semiconductor company produces specialised chips for tech giants including Alphabet, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Amazon. Broadcom recently reported 48% year-over-year revenue growth in its fiscal 2026 second quarter, with net income nearly doubling. Its AI semiconductor segment grew 143% year over year, faster than Nvidia's 92% data centre revenue growth. Chief executive Hock Tan forecasts AI semiconductor revenue will surge over 200% in the fiscal 2026 third quarter, reaching $16 billion. The company expects total quarterly revenue of $29 billion, representing 84% year-over-year growth. ASIC chips are gaining importance due to their energy efficiency and low latency advantages for AI inference tasks.

Broadcom expects $100B AI chip revenue by 2027 as custom XPU deals run through 2031

Broadcom designs custom AI accelerators through multi-year contracts with major tech firms, distinguishing it from typical AI chip stocks reliant on one-off GPU sales. The company has a custom chip deal with Google running through 2031 and counts Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, and Apple among its customers. Last quarter, Broadcom booked over $30 billion in AI orders against $10.8 billion shipped. CEO Hock Tan stated the company's visibility extends to 2028. Broadcom recently partnered with Apollo and Blackstone on a 20-gigawatt compute platform, starting with $35 billion funding for Anthropic's expansion. The company expects over $100 billion in AI chip revenue in fiscal 2027. Beyond chips, Broadcom manufactures networking switches for AI infrastructure and generates steady revenue from infrastructure software, including VMware.

Broadcom's AI chip revenue hits $10.8B, now 2.5 times larger than non-AI semiconductor business

Broadcom has shifted its business narrative dramatically. In late 2024, the company emphasised its non-AI semiconductor business, highlighting a cyclical bottom of $17.8 billion in fiscal 2024. Now, AI dominates the story. In fiscal Q2 2026, AI semiconductor revenue hit a record $10.8 billion, up 143% year-on-year, whilst non-AI semiconductors generated $4.2 billion, up just 6%. AI semiconductors alone accounted for 49% of total company revenue. Management guides fiscal Q3 AI semiconductor revenue to $16 billion and expects $56 billion for fiscal 2026. The company also announced AI bookings exceeding $30 billion in a single quarter. The non-AI business isn't struggling—bookings topped $6 billion against $4.2 billion shipped—but it's no longer the lead story. Broadcom has returned about 31% over the past year, outpacing the S&P 500's roughly 18%.

Samsung, Broadcom sign $200B AI memory chip deal over five years

Samsung Electronics and Broadcom signed a memorandum of understanding on 25 July for a deal worth more than $200 billion over five years. The partnership will focus on memory and foundry technologies for AI infrastructure. The collaboration involves supplying high-bandwidth memory and other solutions for Broadcom's AI accelerators. Foundry operations will use Samsung's two-nanometer and below process technologies for Broadcom's products, including wireless broadband communications. The deal aims to help both companies compete with TSMC in the AI hardware market. Broadcom reported record revenue of $22.2 billion in its second quarter, driven by accelerating AI semiconductor revenue. Samsung likewise reported record quarterly revenue and operating profit in the first quarter, led by increased sales of AI products.
