Requirements
  • Candidates must be willing to develop an understanding and support for The Salvation Army’s mission and purpose in Canada as related to the position responsibilities.
  • Candidates must comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Candidates must provide an original background check satisfactory to The Salvation Army.
  • Criminal Record Review Program clearance is required for positions at Vancouver Harbour Light.
  • Candidates may be required to obtain federal Enhanced Security Clearance.
  • Grade 12 or equivalent is required, such as a British Columbia Certificate of Graduation or British Columbia Adult Graduation Diploma.
  • Candidates must have or be willing to obtain Naloxone training, First Aid with CPR, Mental Health First Aid, and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training.
  • Candidates must have or be willing to obtain current PeerConnectBC Peer Support Worker Certification.
  • Candidates must provide documentation confirming compliance with the Province’s immunization and tuberculosis control program under Residential Care Regulations.
  • Candidates must have one year of related experience, including experience in an applicable community social services sector.
  • Candidates must demonstrate stability in their personal recovery from substance use and knowledge of relapse prevention strategies.
  • Knowledge of 12-step recovery principles is required.
  • Candidates must demonstrate integrity, confidentiality, professional ethics, fairness, and flexibility.
  • Candidates must understand the needs, strengths, challenges, and opportunities of people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, including substance use, mental health, homelessness, and gender-based violence.
  • Candidates must know different recovery models and support services.
  • Candidates must demonstrate the ability to provide a healthy, safe, and non-judgmental space for clients accessing social services or residential care.
  • Candidates must be comfortable and skilled working with diverse populations.
  • Candidates must have basic skills in Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Responsibilities
  • Monitor client and resident activities and remain available for personal, practical, and moral support.
  • Help clients acclimatize to their new environment, understand all rules, and gain confidence in staff.
  • Provide client orientation using the New Client Handbook and facilitate training around chores.
  • Attend in-house 12-step meetings, including Alumni Meetings.
  • Assist with after-hours intake procedures.
  • Support counsellors with client follow-up when there are direct concerns about mental health or well-being, including hourly checks, follow-up check-ins, and urine analysis.
  • Provide and facilitate a weekly step-work group supporting clients with treatment-program step work.
  • Administer evening medications.
  • Report concerning or suspicious behaviour to Treatment Program Management and the clients’ primary counsellors.
  • Hold clients accountable to the principles of recovery.
  • Act as a role model by following a personal recovery program.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all client information and apply knowledge of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
  • Assist clients in accessing outside resources, including 12-step meetings, SMART Recovery meetings, and recovery-based events.
  • Inform and remind clients about rule infractions and ensure infractions are reported to the client’s counsellor and Treatment Program Manager.
  • Participate in yearly client-focused events, including the client Christmas party and summer baseball tournaments.
  • Ensure clients are aware of the available client grievance procedure.
  • Maintain visual contact with each client during every shift and check in with each client during assigned blocks of shifts; document all check-ins.
  • Remain available for unscheduled meetings with clients.
  • Complete essential client documentation for the stabilization unit and treatment program.
  • Maintain respectful and ethical relationships with clients and colleagues in accordance with Salvation Army policies and professional standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of and comply with facility policies and procedures, including Salvation Army Standards and Review procedures.
  • Work cooperatively and courteously with staff, volunteers, visitors, and clients.
  • Pass confidential or safety-related information to the Director of Residential Programs, Treatment Program Manager, Treatment Assistant Manager, or Clinical Supervisor when it may endanger or seriously affect another person or building safety.
  • Consider and act on legitimate requests for assistance from colleagues.
  • Communicate requests for information or Harbour Light presentations from individuals or outside agencies to the Treatment Program Manager or Director of Residential Programs.
  • Participate in seasonal client and program activities, including on-site or off-site activities.
  • Perform other duties and accountabilities as required.
Desired Qualifications
  • Further education in a related field would be an asset.
  • Lived experience with a 12-step recovery program is a significant asset.
  • Experience working with CAMS or another cloud-based client database is an asset.
