Requirements
  • Graduate of accredited Family, Adult, or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program
  • FNP, AGPCNP or AGACNP certification for Nurse Practitioner
  • Unrestricted RN licensure issued by or recognized by the North Carolina Board of Nursing with authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner
  • ARC accredited Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree Physician Assistant Program for Physician Assistant
  • Unrestricted license issued by North Carolina Medical Board with authorization to practice as a Physician Assistant
  • Federal and State Drug Enforcement Administration independent license with unrestricted prescriptive authority
  • APP experience (preferred) ideally in a comparable practice setting and with proven leadership skills
  • Able to clearly articulate scope of practice and practice within guidelines as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in North Carolina and within Duke University Health System
  • Able to independently seek resources and work collaboratively to solve complex problems
  • Able to communicate clearly with patients, families, visitors, healthcare team, physicians, administrators, and leadership
  • Able to use computer and learn new software programs
  • Able to withstand prolonged standing and walking with the ability to move or lift at least fifty pounds
  • Primary hours will be 40 hours per week with rotating Monday through Friday, 12-hour day shifts, weekend shifts; schedule may be modified by leadership
Responsibilities
  • Utilize assessment, diagnostic and clinical skills to provide clinical care to patients during their admission
  • Perform necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures within the scope of the supervising physician
  • Conduct and obtain patient histories, perform physical examinations, monitor patient progress, order medications, laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures
  • Prescriptive practice with exception of chemotherapy and immunomodulatory therapy per Duke policy
  • Document patient course of treatment including History/Physical/Admissions, Problem List and Plan of Care, Daily Progress Note, Procedure Note, Interval Notes, Discharge Summary
  • Accept scheduled and unscheduled inpatients
  • Evaluate potential admission in the emergency room to facilitate patient care
  • Facilitate daily rounds on the unit
  • Collaborate with other programs and services, physicians and nursing staff to provide longitudinal continuity of care
  • Participate in meeting educational requirements of students, residents, fellows and other health care team members
  • Collaborate with research protocol compliance where applicable
  • Collaborate with nurse manager on problem identification and resolution to provide safe, cost-effective patient care
  • Actively participate in program-related committees and projects
  • Provide a summary report on inpatient status to attending and medical resident/fellow on call prior to leaving each evening
  • Assure proper charges posted and appropriate documentation provided
  • Work with team on quality for the unit
  • Complete required leadership training such as Guide to Managing at Duke and other trainings
  • Be familiar with Duke University Health System, Duke Health Integrated Practice and Center for Advanced Practice policies and guidelines
  • Meet monthly with CAP/DHIP director for coaching and mentoring; review team successes and challenges
  • Participate as a member of Leadership Team in decision-making, problem-solving, strategic planning, and implementing goals
  • Attend leadership meetings and retreats to plan future directions
  • Respond to leadership directives in a timely manner
  • Serve as a role model and mentor for team members with professionalism in conduct, communication, and problem resolution
  • Establish strong relationships with medical, nursing, administrative, and community leaders connected with the clinical service unit
  • Seek learning opportunities related to leadership development
  • Promote professional development of healthcare team members
  • Align team to fulfill CAP, DHIP, CSU, and DUHS mission and goals
  • Ensure adequate staffing and schedule oversight
  • Interview new APP applicants
  • Oversee with the Director the new employee selection process and onboarding
  • Ensure clinical competencies of team members are maintained
  • Participate in performance reviews with each team member including coaching conversations and evaluations
  • Perform employee rounding
  • Provide a summary of inpatients to attending and medical resident on call
Desired Qualifications
  • Leadership experience in a comparable practice setting
  • Prior Advanced Practice Provider leadership roles or demonstrated leadership skills
  • Experience with quality improvement initiatives and clinical governance
  • Familiarity with Duke Health System policies and procedures
  • Experience with infusion center operations and patient care workflows
  • Availability to work 40 hours per week with rotating shifts and potential travel as needed
