Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university is preferred, or 5–7 years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3 years of claims handling experience, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience interpreting contractual language in Life and Accident policies.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and interpretive skills with the ability to develop feasible solutions using analysis, experience, and judgment.
  • High technical aptitude and the ability to learn new systems quickly, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Strong time management, oral communication, and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex ideas to upper management professionally.
  • The ability to work independently, make autonomous decisions, take ownership of tasks and relationships, and follow through on obligations.
  • The ability to adapt and adjust plans, goals, and priorities to changing situations and competing demands.
Responsibilities
  • Supervise a team of Life Claims Support associates and oversee daily operations to achieve performance and productivity standards.
  • Understand, interpret, and communicate contractual language in Life and Accident policies.
  • Provide expertise and leadership support in resolving complex claim issues.
  • Evaluate daily workflow in the OnBase platform and load-balance claims to distribute work evenly.
  • Ensure associates have the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to succeed, and identify training gaps and retraining opportunities.
  • Provide feedback to associates and counsel them on performance, attendance, and conduct.
  • Ensure Mainframe and OnBase systems function properly and partner with Information Technology to address system issues.
  • Respond professionally and urgently to escalated claim issues received by mail, fax, or email.
  • Communicate with management about staffing, work volume, and emergency situations.
  • Identify process-improvement opportunities and compare alternative resolutions using logic and reasoning.
  • Develop technical solutions that improve unit efficiency.
  • Maintain relationships with cross-functional partners in Policy Services, Customer Service, Agency Offices, and Legal.
  • Cultivate a positive, accountable, collaborative, creative, and high-performing team.
  • Motivate team members and provide development direction.
  • Support culture and employee-engagement activities and promote employee development.
  • Delegate responsibilities and stretch assignments to high-potential associates.
  • Perform off-cycle quality-review claim audits for coding, documentation, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain and monitor a diary of questionable, sensitive, or potentially fraudulent claims.
  • Collaborate with management and Human Resources to develop action plans for underperforming associates and ensure compliance with progressive disciplinary guidelines.
  • Write performance appraisals and conduct colleague performance discussions.
  • Support organizational training initiatives and ensure staff complete mandatory role-appropriate training.
  • Complete weekly, monthly, and ad hoc reports and interpret data to identify trends and issues for management decision-making.
  • Develop contingency plans for staffing shortages, high work volumes, and system implementations.
  • Present complex information to stakeholders to influence acceptance of innovative suggestions.
  • Lead and partner on claims and other business projects as needed while managing daily responsibilities.
  • Partner with management to retain staff and build organizational bench strength.
  • Interview, hire, and mentor new claims associates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Travel as required.
