Advance Auto Parts vs. Caterpillar: Which stock offers better value in 2026?

Advance Auto Parts and Caterpillar present contrasting investment profiles for 2026, balancing retail recovery against industrial stability. Advance Auto Parts operates in the automotive aftermarket, serving mechanics and DIY enthusiasts. The company recently expanded its AI-powered same-day delivery partnership with OneRail. FY 2025 revenue fell 5.4% year-over-year to $8.6 billion, with net income of $44 million and a 0.5% margin. The firm faces a 2.4x debt-to-equity ratio and negative $298 million free cash flow whilst implementing multi-year restructuring. Caterpillar serves construction, mining, and energy sectors through a global dealer network across nearly 190 countries. FY 2025 revenue grew 4.3% to $67.6 billion. Net income declined to $8.9 billion from $10.8 billion previously, yielding a 13.1% margin. The company is acquiring mining software providers to enhance digital services. Both face distinct macroeconomic pressures, making valuation critical for investment decisions.

AAP closes 700 stores and cuts costs 8% to reshape turnaround plan

Advance Auto Parts has closed around 700 underperforming stores and cut expenses by 8% as part of its turnaround plan, whilst improving gross profit and operating income. The company is guiding for adjusted EPS growth and positive free cash flow this fiscal year. The operational reset aims to transform the low-margin retailer into a leaner operation. The company continues paying a $0.25 quarterly dividend despite the restructuring, though this adds pressure to deliver promised cost savings and margin improvements. However, uncertainty remains around the impact of store closures and weaker early 2025 sales trends on the turnaround's success. Advance Auto Parts' narrative projects $9 billion revenue and $295.3 million earnings by 2028, implying a fair value of $56.76 per share, representing a 3% downside to current prices.

Advance Auto Parts stock soars 44% as turnaround plan defies Wall Street's pessimism

Advance Auto Parts has defied Wall Street pessimism, with shares rising 44% year-to-date to around $57 despite analysts maintaining hold or sell ratings. Major firms including Morgan Stanley, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs had set price targets between $40 and $54 per share, citing concerns over the company's turnaround plan and shrinking margins. The retailer's first-quarter results exceeded expectations as its restructuring plan, which included closing 700 underperforming stores, reduced expenses 8% year-over-year to $1.1 billion. Same-store sales increased 3.5%, pushing gross profit up 6% to $1.18 billion. Operating income reached $69 million, reversing a $131 million loss from the previous year. For fiscal 2026, Advance Auto Parts expects adjusted earnings per share between $2.40 and $3.10, representing 22% growth at the midpoint.

Jobless claims hit 209K as housing starts reach 1.465M, Walmart slides despite earnings beat

US weekly jobless claims fell to 209,000 from a revised 212,000, remaining near multi-decade lows. Continuing claims rose slightly to 1.782 million, marking the fourth consecutive week below 1.8 million — the first such stretch in two years. April housing starts reached 1.465 million units, beating expectations of 1.42 million, whilst building permits hit 1.442 million. However, single-family construction declined 9% on starts and 5.5% on permits, with all gains coming from multi-family developments, which rose 14.3% and 11.5% respectively. The May Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index turned negative at -0.4%, missing forecasts of 19.0% after last month's 26.7%. Walmart posted earnings of $0.66 per share on revenues of $177.75 billion, slightly beating estimates, though shares fell 3.5% on cautious guidance.
