(NASDAQ: PLAY) announced a significant leadership change as Tarun Lal has retired as CEO, effective August 3, 2026. * Darin Harper's elevation to CEO is a critical part of the transition at Dave & Buster's. * Harper's compensation package includes an annual salary of $650,000 and a target cash bonus equal to 100% of that salary, alongside long-term incentive plans valued at over $6.5 million. Dave & Buster's Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: PLAY) announced a significant leadership change as Tarun Lal has retired as CEO, effective August 3, 2026. Darin Harper, who previously served as Chief Financial Officer since June 2024, will take over the CEO role. Lal's decision to step back is driven by a desire to spend more time with family in India. His departure marks the conclusive shift in leadership, prompting a reevaluation of company strategies and initiatives as they navigate a challenging market environment. Appointment of Darin Harper Darin Harper's elevation to CEO is a critical part of the transition at Dave & Buster's. Harper brings nearly three decades of experience in the consumer and entertainment sectors, previously serving as CFO of Main Event Entertainment before its acquisition by Dave & Buster's. His close work with Lal on the "Back to Basics" plan underscores his familiarity with the operational strategy that aims to enhance same-store sales and streamline performance. The transition reflects confidence in maintaining strategic continuity and bolstering operational effectiveness during a transformative time for the company. Financial Insights Harper's compensation package includes an annual salary of $650,000 and a target cash bonus equal to 100% of that salary, alongside long-term incentive plans valued at over $6.5 million. The employment agreement secures Harper's participation in various equity grants, aiming to align his interests with shareholder value. This strong financial backing demonstrates the board's commitment to providing Harper with the resources needed to drive future growth. The performance-dependent elements of his compensation suggest that achieving set metrics could be key to regaining share value, given that PLAY shares have declined by 37.7% year-to-date. Market Implications The stock has fluctuated within a 52-week range of $9.40 to $28.02, signaling investor concerns regarding its long-term prospects. Harper's appointment comes as the company faces short interest of 33% of outstanding shares, highlighting skepticism among investors. The board's faith in Harper could instill confidence, but momentum will hinge significantly on forthcoming strategic execution despite recent challenges in the competitive entertainment space. Future Monitoring Continued oversight of Dave & Buster's performance will be essential, particularly as Lal transitions out and Harper formulates his approach to leadership. The company plans to maintain Lal's advisory role until January 31, 2028, allowing for a gradual transition of responsibilities and ongoing strategic guidance. Investors should monitor the effectiveness of this leadership change and its potential impact on the "Back to Basics" strategy, with particular attention to results in the coming quarters, especially relating to same-store sales growth. Dave & Buster's CEO departs.

Dave & Buster's CEO departs. He will be replaced by the company's current CFO, Darin Harper, who has been at the company since 2024. August 04, 2026 Dave & Buster's Dave & Buster's CEO Tarun Lal has retired from his role after a little over a year in the job. Lal, who was appointed in July 2025, informed the company's board of directors of his decision on August 3, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family in India. Lal has agreed to serve as an advisor to the company at least until the end of FY2027. His successor is D&B's current CFO, Darin Harper. Harper has held the role since June 2024 and has nearly 30 years of experience across a number of entertainment and F&B companies. D&B says that Harper worked closely with Lal on the company's "back to basics" plan. 'Difficult decision to retire' Lal commented: "Leading Dave & Buster's has been one of the great privileges of my career. Recently, I have found myself needing to spend more time in India with my family. I have made the difficult personal decision to retire and transition full-time leadership to Darin, in whom I have great confidence. "I plan to remain involved with the business and have complete confidence in where this business is headed." The chairman of the board, Kevin Sheehan, added: "On behalf of the entire Board, I want to thank Tarun for his outstanding leadership and wish him and his family all the best. In his time as CEO, Tarun brought discipline, energy and a relentless focus on the guest back to this business, and the back-to-basics plan has put the company firmly on the right path. Darin is the clear choice to lead Dave & Buster's going forward and has the full support of the board. "He is an exceptional leader who understands every aspect of this business, is deeply respected throughout the organisation, and has been instrumental in developing and executing the strategy that is now delivering results." Cory Hatton, Dave & Buster's head of entertainment finance, investor relations and treasurer, will serve as interim CFO while the company searches for Harper's successor.
