- Determine and demonstrate proper work-site protection techniques, identify workplace safety hazards, use personal protective equipment, and follow applicable safety rules, regulations, laws, procedures, and Virginia Department of Transportation practices.
- Participate as a working crew member, perform manual labor and other maintenance tasks, and use hand and power tools to complete assigned work.
- Perform maintenance repair, replacement, preventive maintenance, and minor equipment repairs; complete pre-trip inspections for vehicles and equipment.
- Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, and lane closures using the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; assist with inventory tracking and record maintenance.
- A combination of training, experience, or education in maintenance, vehicle operations, or a related field.
- Experience in emergency operations, including snow removal, storms, and accident cleanup.
- Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- A valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.
- Ability to read and interpret work plans, specifications, plans, and sketches; complete accurate work documentation and simple paperwork.
- Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools and light, medium, and heavy-duty highway maintenance equipment.
- Knowledge and application of work-zone safety, traffic controls, flagging operations, federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
