C-Suite changes at Nike and Old Navy.

C-Suite changes at Nike and Old Navy. Athletic brand hires Walmart exec; Gap unit names new president and CEO. 15 hours ago September 3, 2026 Nike has undergone several c-suite changes in the past couple of years as its CEO works to revitalize the high-profile brand. Photo: M. Suhail/iStock by Getty Images * Nike Inc. (Beaverton, Ore.) has hired ex-Walmart exec Jane Ewing as its EVP/Chief Commercial Officer, effective Sept 7. Ewing had previously worked in a variety of executive roles at Walmart, most recently as Interim CEO for its Sam's Club China unit, President & CEO Elliott Hill said in an e-mail to the company's workforce. "[Ewing] understands what it takes to lead and win in dynamic environments," said Hill, whose efforts to re-energize the brand since returning to Nike in late 2024 have included making several executive-level changes. "And her connection to Nike began long before joining the Swoosh, as a young middle-distance runner competing in Nike spikes." Gap Inc. (San Francisco) announced it has promoted Michael Francis to President and CEO of its 1200-store Old Navy unit, effective Nov. 2. Francis will succeed Haio Barbeito, who will transition to an advisory capacity. Francis joined Gap five months as Chief Customer Officer, Old Navy, and Head of Marketing Shared Services. Prior to joining Old Navy, he held posts at Walmart, DreamWorks Animation, JCPenney and Target. News of Francis' promotion came the same day as Gap reported its second quarter results, during which Old Navy's net sales fell 4%, to $2.1 billion, as compared to last year. That decrease "reflected expected pressure in the women's seasonal assortment, in addition to an unanticipated slowdown in traffic," the company said in its earnings release. Related Topics:

Target 'cheap chic' pioneer takes helm at struggling Old Navy as sales fall 4%

Gap Inc. has appointed Michael Francis as president and CEO of Old Navy, effective 2 November. Francis joined the company in March as chief customer officer and head of marketing shared services. Francis previously spent 26 years at Target, where he helped develop the retailer's "cheap chic" image in the early 2000s, distinguishing it from competitors like Walmart and Kmart. He later spent a decade at Walmart supporting revenue growth. The appointment comes as Old Navy faces challenges. Second quarter net sales fell 4% year-over-year to $2.1 billion, reflecting pressure in women's seasonal assortment and slower traffic. Gap Inc. shares rose more than 18% in premarket trading following the announcement. Current CEO Haio Barbeito will transition into an advisory role.

Gap stock surges 15% on raised profit outlook, but Old Navy's 4% sales decline divides analysts

Gap shares surged 15% on Friday, marking their best single-day gain in 16 months, after the apparel retailer reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings and raised its full-year profit forecast. The company posted adjusted earnings of $0.52 per share, beating the $0.48 consensus estimate. However, Old Navy, which comprises roughly 57% of Gap's business, saw comparable sales decline 4% due to weaker demand and slower customer traffic. Gap appointed former Target executive Michael Francis as Old Navy's president and CEO, effective 2 November. Wall Street remains divided on the brand's turnaround prospects. Bank of America expressed concern over pressure on Old Navy's lower-income customers, whilst BTIG maintained a more optimistic view, attributing the weakness to execution issues that management is addressing.

Barbeito, who was named Old Navy president and CEO in August 2022, will transition into an advisory capacity as of November. Francis first joined Gap as chief customer officer in March this year, and will work to position the brand for its "next chapter of growth". Francis said of his promotion: "Old Navy is an iconic American brand with a unique place in the lives of millions of customers. I am honoured to lead this incredible team and excited by the opportunities ahead. "Together, we will continue to sharpen our customer focus, strengthen the brand's cultural relevance, enhance the customer experience across every touchpoint, and build on the momentum already underway." Gap president and CEO Richard Dickson said of its second quarter performance: "While top-line results in the second quarter were modestly below expectations, continued operational and financial rigor contributed to gross margin strength resulting in the Company exceeding profit expectations.
