About the role:
We are seeking a manager for the manufacturing design engineering group to drive excellence across our manufacturing facilities.
The MDE manager will oversee a team across multiple geographies, while driving excellence in quality, assembly, and testing in our factories across our product portfolio. They will work closely with hardware engineering, supply chain, and other internal cross-functional teams on the development, launch and sustaining of our hardware products at our contract manufacturers, including identifying and unlocking strategic value across our supply base. Ideal candidates will be adaptable, approach unstructured problems with curiosity and support the continuous growth and improvement of the team, while developing and aligning strategic goals with leadership.

In this role, you will:
- Spearhead a global manufacturing operations team based in North America and Asia
- Manage across cross-functional teams and JDM partners to develop manufacturing processes at the factory to drive line qualification, manufacturing test metrics, and rigorous validation plans for high volume production
- Collaborate with Engineering teams on system-level design for manufacturability (DFM), identifying and mitigating process risks early in development
- Define the bar for factory health including yield, throughput, RMA rate expectations
- Drive factory optimizations through lean, six sigma, cycle time studies to unlock highest efficiency
- Develop and implement testing & quality control plans to ensure compliance to product specifications
- Research: stay abreast of the latest trends in related products, fabrication techniques, vendors, quality assurance, process, etc.
- Mentor, coach, and uplevel the team around you. You will be a role model.
- Champion, role model, and embed Samsara’s cultural principles (Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, Win as a Team) as we scale globally and across new offices
- Hire, develop and lead an inclusive, engaged, and high performing team
Minimum requirements for the role:
- 10+ years of experience in high volume electronics industry
- Degree in electrical, mechanical, manufacturing engineering or equivalent
- Solid technical background in factory operation management, manufacturing process engineering, manufacturing test engineering and quality management
- Demonstrated ability to own Failure Modes Effect Analysis (FMEA), Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA), as well as 8-D problem solving
- Experience with electronics design and assembly, including CAD, tolerance analysis, and test engineering (power, optical, RF, etc)
- Ability to travel to manufacturing partners up to 10%
- Exhibited ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and drive independent work
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
An ideal candidate also has:
- Demonstrated experience evaluating and auditing new and existing manufacturing facilities
- Ability to drive continuous improvement while incorporating technologies and processes that align manufacturing operations to improving industry standards.
- Worked on a wide variety of systems for different use cases and environments including automotive, indoor and outdoor industrial areas, and whatever we may do next.
Samsara’s Compensation Philosophy: Samsara’s compensation program is designed to deliver total compensation (based on role, level, and geography) that is above market. We do this through our base salary + bonus/variable + restricted stock unit awards (RSUs). A new hire RSU award is awarded at the time of hire, and additional RSU refresh grants may be awarded annually.
We pay for performance, and top performers are eligible to receive above target equity refresh awards which allow employees to achieve higher market positioning.
The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
$119,000—$175,000 USD
