  • Diploma, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan
  • Surgical Nurse Internship seeks candidates with 2 years of clinical nursing experience
  • BSN required within eight years of hire date if not already held
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required by completion of core orientation
  • Critical care or Advanced Life Support (ALS) is required for some registered nurses and unit specific
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment to set an appropriate plan of action
  • Must be able to communicate constantly both verbally, in writing and electronically
  • Must be able to perform duties that include frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds and occasional heavier tasks, and may involve long periods at a computer
  • Current license to practice nursing in the state of Michigan
  • Successful completion of Hospital, Core, and Department specific orientation based upon unit and experience level
Responsibilities
  • Participate in a full-time, day-shift orientation lasting approximately six to eight months
  • Transition into an available Operating Room Registered Nurse position after orientation, which may involve placement on any shift depending on department needs (including night shift)
  • Demonstrate competencies specific to the surgical patient population while providing direct patient care as part of the operating room team
  • Read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment to set an appropriate plan of action for patient care
  • Document nursing history and age appropriate physical/emotional needs/strengths for assigned patients and review vital signs to assess condition
  • Develop individualized plans of care incorporating clinical pathways and patient/family input, coordinating discharge planning as needed
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with nursing techniques and policies, and ensure patient comfort and safety
  • Initiate a patient education plan and coordinate its implementation; manage the care plan and delegate patient care interventions as needed
  • Evaluate progress toward expected outcomes and document patient responses to interventions
  • Participate in quality improvement activities and apply results to nursing practice
  • Maintain ongoing professional development and competency through educational activities and continuing education
  • Collaborate with multiple health disciplines to effect changes and achieve optimal patient outcomes
  • Deliver ethically proper care respecting patient autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and rights
  • Integrate research findings into practice and participate in research-related activities as appropriate
  • Contribute to a safe, ethical, and patient-centered care environment and participate in unit-specific standards of practice
  • Attend unit staff meetings and contribute to a healthy professional work environment
