SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Reviews construction plans and specifications for code compliance, and provides information and assistance to permit applicants, contractors and inspection staff.

Position Specific Summary
The Building Permit Specialist position at the City of Tucson’s Planning and Development Services Department facilitates the processing and review of plans and permits using technical knowledge and established procedures to ensure quality approvals and construction in the community.
Work is performed under the supervision of the Management Assistant. This position does not supervise.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reviews plans by ensuring compliance with City codes and policies. Approves plan and permit case types requiring limited technical training under direct supervision of a plan reviewer, engineering associate, or planner.
Completes various permitting functions, including verifying contacts and contractor licenses, auditing approvals, verifying conditions have been satisfied, stamping approved plans, assessing fees, issuing permits, and completing permit closeout.
Provides assistance to customers in person and electronically. Responds to inquiries and complaints related to submittals, consults with internal and external parties, advises internal and external customers on procedures, resolves problems regarding plans and permits, and explains actions required for permitting processing.
Assesses all permit and plan submittals, including supporting documents to ensure compliance with minimum submittal requirements and application completeness. Initiates review process by uploading documents into software and establishes a workflow process. Determines appropriate case type and necessary reviewers based on project criteria. Ensures accuracy of information entered into the permit database.
Maintains current standard operating procedures with updated information. Communicates process issues to supervisor and participates in process improvements. Maintains permit and plan records and spreadsheets; Makes corrections to permit and plan records as needed. Assists supervisor in monitoring compliance with permit procedures.
Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Work Experience: Prior work experience in office procedures, administrative support, and customer service while utilizing standard office software and technology.
License/Certifications:
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At least 3 years of experience in local government in duties associated with processing plans/permits for building permits, land development, zoning, plan review or related area.
Formal education, certifications, and degrees in a field related to city planning, building compliance, or permitting.
Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Full Hourly Range: $24.16 - 41.68 USD
