Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of two years of experience as a medical assistant in an outpatient medical practice or related medical facility is required.
  • Knowledge of general medical office procedures is required.
  • A Medical Assistant Certificate is preferred.
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment is required.
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail while working with frequent interruptions is required.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are required to interact with patients and other visitors.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with medical staff and coworkers is required.

Responsibilities
  • Provide medical support assistance for clinic patients according to established standards and practices.
  • Greet and assist patients as needed.
  • Obtain, organize, and maintain patient files.
  • Answer and return patient phone calls in support of nursing and office staff.
  • Perform administrative tasks, including entering office charges into the electronic medical record.
  • Assist physicians and clinical staff with patient examinations, procedures, tests, treatments, and minor procedures.
  • Work in coordination with and as directed by registered nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, or the office manager.
  • Escort patients to examination rooms and take medical histories and vital signs as indicated.
  • Prepare examination and treatment rooms with the necessary instruments.
  • Instruct patients in sample collection, testing, and procedures.
  • Schedule appointments, examinations, and tests as needed.
  • Screen and respond to triage calls and ensure follow-up by a nurse or physician.
  • Obtain and send medical reports and records from other healthcare providers as needed.
  • Sterilize equipment and instruments used daily, and clean and stock rooms as scheduled and as needed.
  • Attend required clinical meetings.
  • Assist with obtaining prior authorizations for applicable procedures and tests, and assist with completing FMLA, work release, and related forms.
  • Perform patient X-ray testing and assist with applicable quality testing and reporting for OSHA and state regulations.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures and fingersticks as ordered; coordinate laboratory samples with outside laboratories and complete or assist with in-office laboratory processing and reporting.
  • Complete required online and other laboratory requisitions accompanying blood samples sent to outside laboratories.
  • Administer injections, immunizations, and medications as directed by physicians.
  • Assist physicians and clinical staff with patient prescriptions.
  • Dispose of medical waste appropriately.
  • Enter office charges and perform related support duties through the electronic medical record.
  • Maintain patient privacy in written medical records and computer records.
  • Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
  • Perform essential job functions in a manner that ensures the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices that may result in harm to patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Recognize and take appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards for patients, visitors, and employees.
  • Adhere to DCH Health System policies, procedures, behavioral standards, compliance requirements, and employee handbook requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
