Requirements
  • You have a BS in Computer Science or a related discipline and eight years of experience, an MS in the same fields and five years of experience, or a PhD in Computer Science and two years of experience.
  • You must work on-site five days per week at the SEI offices in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, or Arlington, Virginia.
  • You must be willing to travel to other SEI offices, sponsor sites, conferences, and offsite meetings on occasion, with moderate travel of approximately 25% outside your home location.
  • You will be subject to a background investigation and must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Department of War security clearance.
  • You have extensive research or engineering experience in applied autonomy and artificial intelligence, including tools, techniques, algorithms, software, and programming languages for deep learning, reinforcement learning, statistics, sensors and sensor fusion, planning, computer vision, or related areas.
  • You have applied systems engineering principles, collaborated across multidisciplinary project teams, supported multiple phases of the engineering lifecycle, and understand requirements for deploying and operating complex systems.
  • You have deep experience using simulators for development, machine learning model training, and evaluation activities supporting uncrewed vehicle use cases.
  • You understand current state-of-the-art modeling techniques for building digital twin 3D objects and environments.
  • You have addressed challenges in marine, land, or space domains, including sensor performance and collision meshes.
  • You have experience with physics-based simulators such as NVIDIA Isaac Sim.
  • You have a strong understanding of robotics principles and design techniques for air, sea, or land-based vehicles.
  • You have experience applying machine learning in these domains, including sensor fusion, navigation, object search and tracking, collision avoidance, multi-agent collaboration, and human-machine teaming.
  • You understand machine learning principles and have applied machine learning techniques to real-world problems with successful implementations.
  • You have designed and implemented complex machine learning functions and architectures for specific autonomous systems.
  • You are familiar with simulation environments and their role in training and testing machine learning models.
  • You have designed and conducted system evaluation activities for machine learning components to assess operational fit and readiness.
  • You have experience with model experimentation software such as MLflow or Weights & Biases for rigorous model development and selection.
  • You have strong development experience and can design and implement software and systems resources for packaging and managing requirements for artificial intelligence and machine learning prototypes.
  • You frequently use Docker to manage software resources and pipeline orchestration.
  • You may have experience building applications in Azure, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • You can communicate complex ideas to people without deep subject-area knowledge and collaborate with customers and colleagues.
  • You can meet deadlines while multitasking under pressure and shifting priorities.
  • You can quickly learn new procedures, techniques, and approaches and connect research and engineering with practical challenges.
  • You possess broad technical interests and deep knowledge of a field such as machine learning, autonomy and adaptive systems, or data analytics.
Responsibilities
  • You will identify, shape, apply, conduct, and lead engineering research matching critical U.S. government needs.
  • You will enhance simulation capabilities and apply simulation tools to support autonomy-related projects.
  • You will work with and lead interdisciplinary teams to turn research results into prototype operational capabilities for government customers and stakeholders.
  • You will conduct and lead novel prototyping in applied artificial intelligence, focusing on machine learning in autonomy and uncrewed systems across multiple domains.
  • You will work with AI Division leaders and colleagues to plan, develop, and carry out an overall research and engineering strategy and influence the national research and engineering agenda regarding future technology.
  • You will participate on teams of software developers, researchers, designers, and technical leads.
  • You will build relationships and collaborate with researchers, government customers, and other stakeholders to understand challenges, needs, possible solutions, and research and engineering directions.
  • You will improve the team’s technical capabilities by mentoring and teaching others, participating in software and other design sessions, and sharing technical insights across the SEI AI Division.

  • You have a track record of synthesizing lessons learned from research or engineering activities for publication, with demonstrated contributions through published research, code, models, data, software applications, or technical perspectives.
  • You are familiar with technical challenges and emerging trends in computing and information science, and aware of opportunities in industry and government.
  • You have led technical projects and collaborated across research teams while mentoring other researchers.
  • You have formulated and delivered successful research and engineering proposals to funding agencies and led the resulting projects.
  • You have worked or are familiar with Navy, Marine, Air Force, Army, Space Force, DARPA, IARPA, Service Labs, or other government research sponsors.
