A Senior Engineer in Shipt’s Infrastructure space is expected to build patterns and find ways to make the team and the products the team owns better. The Systems Engineering team builds and maintains the absolute foundation for all the technology that allows Shipt to be successful.
From day to day, you may need to design and define a new cloud network and its security features. You may need to analyze and manage traffic flow through a private connection to a vendor or NAT traffic to a partner to discover the root cause of an incident. You will certainly create and manage the company’s computing and Kubernetes resources. All the while, you’ll be challenged to do this work in a performant and cost-efficient way. You’ll do this with a plethora of tools built in-house, native tooling provided by Google Cloud (GCP) or with Infra as Code (IaC) tooling like Terraform. In short, you will find ways to allow the Systems team to operate consistently and efficiently. With every action, you will empower every Shipt engineer to “deliver the goods” as rapidly as the business requires.
What You’ll Need to Be Successful
You have likely worked in this space for at least three years working with scalable cloud or data-center infrastructure to understand what that all meant! Working with Terraform and its HCL language in almost any capacity and understanding the essential inner workings of Kubernetes have prepared you for the core responsibilities of your job. Your one or two years of experience and independence working in these spaces will increase the speed with which you onboard. Troubleshooting problems with minimal clues and learning to do it better and better each time is something you’ve done, and you’re expected to grow over time.
As you get comfortable with the team’s tools and methods, you will discover ways to improve them. You’ll start to see, propose, and work in ways to secure our networks better, utilize our computing resources better, reduce your on-call work with automation or thorough documentation for well-known problems, and collect novel information that enhances the observability of the team’s work, ultimately reducing the amount of troubleshooting you and the team does. You might choose to use a language like Go or Python to solve these problems. You’ll execute what you see in partnership with others on the team or by mentoring and guiding less-experienced engineers through the work.

Help direct the selection and use of cloud infrastructure technologies
Collect and analyze data to support optimal utilization of cloud resources
Document, automate, observe, and secure everything you touch
Deliver invisible and frictionless infrastructure that empowers engineers
Provide mentorship to other engineers
Extend the depth of your experience and discover greater breadth outside of it
Participate in an on-call rotation with the rest of your team

Work Arrangement:
Shipt considers candidates located near a Shipt office or workspace in Birmingham, San Francisco, or Minneapolis to be hybrid, which means that they have the flexibility to work from home (with leader approval) or at a Shipt office in order to facilitate the ability to innovate, collaborate, and spark team connections. In-office expectations will vary by role and leader. Certain roles may require in-office presence on a full-time basis.
