Verizon, Nvidia and Lockheed Martin use 5G to track drones in real time

Verizon Communications has partnered with Lockheed Martin, Nvidia, Keysight Technologies, ODC and Astris AI to demonstrate drone-tracking technology using 5G networks. The system, called NetSense, was tested in Miami in July. NetSense combines Verizon's existing 5G spectrum with Nvidia's AI Aerial platform, ODC's AI-native Radio Access Network software, and Keysight's radio-frequency simulation technology. The system analyses radio-frequency disturbances to identify drones, predict flight paths and provide real-time alerts. The demonstration showed NetSense could detect and track drones without requiring changes to existing cellular infrastructure. The technology is designed for airports, power plants, stadiums, schools, hospitals and other critical infrastructure, as well as government monitoring. Separately, Morningstar named Verizon among its top 10 dividend stocks.

SoCal fiber lines slashed, thousands left in SOS mode - nobody will say who.

SoCal fiber lines slashed, thousands left in SOS mode - nobody will say who. Critical infrastructure sabotaged in America's second-largest metro while the border stays wide open Someone sliced through multiple fiber cables in Southern California on Sunday, knocking out Verizon service for what may be well over 12,000 customers - and neither the company nor any public official will say who did it, how they got access, or why. This isn't just a phone outage. It's a demonstration that the communications backbone of the nation's second-largest metropolitan area can be taken offline by vandals with basic tools and zero accountability. At a moment when the southern border remains wide open and cartel operations penetrate deeper into American communities, the federal government can't guarantee that a major city's emergency networks stay online. First responders rely on these lines. Ordinary Americans rely on them. And nobody in charge will say who's cutting them - or why. Verizon confirmed the outages stem from what it called deliberate physical damage to fiber lines. In a statement, the company said: "These are not simple property crimes; they are dangerous disruptions that cut off vital lifelines for our first responders and public safety officials who rely on constant connectivity." But Verizon refused to specify where the cables were cut or how many customers were actually hit. More than 12,000 users reported outages on Downdetector, the New York Post reported, though the real number impacted is likely far higher - California alone has nearly 8 million Verizon subscribers. ABC7 Los Angeles reported that affected customers' phones displayed only SOS emergency satellite mode. A line of desperate customers stretched out the door at a Verizon store in North Hollywood, only to be told there was nothing the company could do - and then the store closed in their faces. "They're charging us x amount of money each month, and then they do this. It's unprofessional, unacceptable," customer Jovan Jordan told ABC7. The New York Post framed the incident within a broader pattern of infrastructure attacks: AT&T has battled copper thieves slicing through utility poles in rural Sonoma County, and T-Mobile went dark for thousands across multiple states just two weeks ago. ABC7, meanwhile, noted that New York and Philadelphia also reported Verizon outages Saturday - though Verizon claimed that earlier disruption was resolved. Whether those incidents connect to the Southern California vandalism remains unexplained. One X user directed blame at Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and City Councilmember Nithya Raman: "God forbid there's an emergency and we can't call for help because of the failed state you perpetuate." Someone cut the lines. Someone knows who. And until the people running this country can answer basic questions about who is attacking American infrastructure - and secure a border through which criminal networks operate with impunity - every customer staring at an SOS screen has a right to ask what, exactly, the government is securing if not this.

Vandalized fiber lines cause Verizon service outage for thousands of SoCal customers.

Vandalized fiber lines cause Verizon service outage for thousands of SoCal customers. Sunday, August 9, 2026 6:32PM Verizon said vandals cut multiple fiber lines, causing a service interruption for some mobile and internet customers across SoCal. LOS ANGELES (KABC) - Verizon says phone service for thousands of customers is affected after vandals cut multiple fiber lines. The wireless carrier said the vandalism is causing a service interruption for some mobile phone and internet customers across Southern California. Verizon has not yet specified exactly where the cables were cut or how many customers are affected. Other cities like New York and Philadelphia also reported outages. Some Eyewitness News colleagues said their Verizon phones had no service, showing only the SOS emergency satellite service on Sunday. Verizon said repairs are underway, and it expects service to be fully restored at some point on Sunday evening. "Acts of network theft and vandalism represent a direct threat to the safety and security of our communities. These are not simple property crimes; they are dangerous disruptions that cut off vital lifelines for our first responders and public safety officials who rely on constant connectivity," Verizon wrote in a statement. Eyewitness News spoke with a line of desperate customers out the door at a Verizon location in North Hollywood. Even after the store closed, frustrated customers kept showing up. "I mean, not too happy, because they're charging us prices this month, every month, and it's costly. And they are saying they have no solution for why we don't have no network. I mean, it's been out all day. Can't reach nobody or anything. My phone's been dead all day," said Jovan Jordan. "I walked to the nearest store here, and they told us there's nothing they can do. They just closed the door in our face. They're charging us x amount of money each month, and then they do this. It's unprofessional, unacceptable." On Saturday, thousands of other Verizon customers across the country also reported service issues. Verizon says that problem was resolved. Related topics. Watch Live

Boards recruit retired CEOs as succession pipelines dry up, 34% of new S&P 500 chiefs previously led public companies

Cracker Barrel's appointment of 69-year-old retired CEO Dave Deno has highlighted a growing trend of companies turning to former executives to fill leadership gaps. Deno, who stepped down as CEO of Bloomin' Brands in 2024, replaced Julie Masino after her departure following a controversial logo redesign. Data from Russell Reynolds Associates shows 34% of S&P 500 CEOs appointed in the first half of 2026 previously led a public company, up from 22% the year prior. Verizon and Boeing have similarly tapped retired CEOs Dan Schulman and Kelly Ortberg. The trend reflects weakening succession pipelines as CEOs stay longer in their roles. Average CEO age increased by 10 years to 61 between 2000 and 2023, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research. External hires at S&P 500 firms rose to 33% last year from 18% in 2024.
