Requirements
  • Candidates must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Candidates must complete the learning program with an 80% passing score on the written and skills performance examination.
  • Candidates must hold Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
  • Other resuscitation certifications may be required depending on the department.
  • Candidates must be able to provide direct patient care, stand and walk for prolonged periods, and lift, position, push, and transfer patients and supplies or equipment, including loads of 100 or more pounds.
  • Candidates must comply with annual mandatory requirements, including TB screening, ethics, safety, information security, abuse and neglect, blood-borne pathogen, annual competency, age/population-specific competency, orientation, and unit-specific training as applicable.
Responsibilities
  • Carry out patients’ plans of care for physical needs under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
  • Provide bedside patient care using aseptic technique, medical terminology, and patient-care equipment.
  • Assist nurses and physicians with procedures.
  • Operate patient-care equipment safely and retrieve needed patient-care items.
  • Perform unit clerical duties, including coordinating designated unit activities, transcribing orders, maintaining medical records, and serving as a unit receptionist.
  • Prepare rooms before admissions and after discharges and complete patients’ belongings lists during admission and transfer.
  • Respond to patients’, families’, and visitors’ needs and perform purposeful rounds.
  • Perform service recovery activities and refer unusual problems to the Nurse Manager or designee.
  • Check meals and trays, set up and feed patients as needed, and resolve issues involving late or incorrect trays.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment and notify the appropriate departments to preserve a clean and safe environment.
  • Place and monitor restraints, including circulation, skin integrity, breathing, repositioning, range of motion, skin care, toileting, hydration, and release.
  • Operate cardiac monitors, including switches, alarms, rhythm strips, and lead placement.
  • Perform point-of-care testing, obtain vital signs, measure abdominal girth, weigh patients, and measure intake and output.
  • Apply pneumatic air stockings and TED hose and ambulate, turn, and position patients.
  • Assist with incentive spirometry and coughing or deep-breathing exercises; set up oxygen therapy; monitor pulse oximetry; perform tracheostomy care and oral or tracheal suctioning when permitted.
  • Place patients on specialty beds, perform sterile and clean dressing changes, provide pin-site care, and assist with traction monitoring.
  • Administer enemas, perform straight catheterization, and provide catheter care.
  • Provide hygiene, grooming, mouth care, fresh water, perineal care, and toileting.
  • Collect urine, sputum, blood, and stool specimens, including venipuncture and specimens from indwelling catheters.
  • Answer unit phones, provide directions, notify physicians and nursing staff of arrivals, receive articles, and manage pneumatic-tube carriers.
  • Prepare worksheets, confirm appointments, verify census information, and communicate admissions, transfers, discharges, room changes, and deaths through the computer.
  • Notify staff of unit activities, ensure specimen labels and requisitions are complete, report critical laboratory values, and complete pre-operative checklist data.
  • Complete admission, transfer, discharge, death-summary, chart, and medical-record documentation.
  • Enter, transcribe, flag, fax, sign, and route physician, medication, test, procedure, and consult orders; use backup systems during computer downtime.
  • Obtain and give shift reports and check charts for current, stat, flagged, unsigned, and verbal or telephone orders.
  • Follow safety and infection-control policies, use standard precautions, dispose of hazardous waste, maintain a safe and clean therapeutic environment, and report risks.
  • Obtain reports from Registered Nurses, communicate patient-condition changes and complaints, document care, identify problems, gather data, suggest solutions, and work through appropriate authority.
  • Provide timely, courteous, respectful, confidential, and age-appropriate care to patients and families.
  • Participate in unit goals, staff meetings, mandatory education, performance and process-improvement activities, data collection, research activities, and nursing-unit committees.
  • Apply restraints and monitor responses, follow pain-management plans, and recognize and report possible abuse or neglect.
  • Maintain equipment and organized work areas, provide hand-off reports, respond promptly to patient requests, explain procedures and care, and keep patients and families informed.
Desired Qualifications
  • Candidates with Certified Nursing Assistant experience or previous hospital experience are preferred.
  • Post-high-school vocational or specialized training is preferred.
