MongoDB Labs is the company research center in the Research & Incubation division. The Labs is tasked with driving research to identify and explore technologies that have the potential to advance industry with focus on growing MongoDB’s business substantially. The Labs researchers and RSEs have a proven track record of published papers and/or participation on program committees and advisory panels.
We are looking for a VP of Research to lead MongoDB Labs. The ideal candidate should have the ability to develop original research agendas, have an in-depth understanding of industry current and future trends as well as the intimate knowledge of the research landscape.
This role can be based out of our Seattle office or remotely in North America.
Successful candidates will have most of the following qualities:
- PhD in Computer Science
- Track record of strong publications in databases, distributed systems or related fields
- Extensive experience leading research projects, managing, growing and mentoring researchers/engineers
- Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills and desire for cross-team collaboration
- Proven success in designing, writing, testing and maintaining distributed and/or highly concurrent software systems in large, long-lived C/C++ code bases
- Excellent team player
Position Expectations:
- Work closely with VP of R&I, offices of CTO and CPO, product and engineering teams to define and drive research strategy and prioritize the team’s deliverables
- Drive original research, prototypes, and evaluations of new industry trends intersecting with related areas of research that will potentially contribute and grow MongoDB business substantially
- Establish close relations with academia, work with external researchers to foster innovation and inclusion of MongoDB into research trends
- Proactively prepare, transition and drive promising research directions through initial stages of incubations.
- Work closely with product and engineering teams to evaluate and help set architectural and product directions
- Manage and grow MongoDB Labs
