Two credit unions just won the Navy's highest financial institution honor - Here's why that matters.

Two credit unions just won the Navy's highest financial institution honor - Here's why that matters. When the Navy decides to hand out awards for excellence, you know the competition is fierce. So when Navy Federal Credit Union and Keys Federal Credit Union both snagged the 2025 Navy Distinguished Credit Union of the Year awards, it wasn't just another participation trophy moment - it was recognition of something genuinely impressive. The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) announced that these two institutions stood out among all the banks and credit unions serving Navy installations. Navy Federal took the honor for their work at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, while Keys Federal earned recognition at Naval Air Station Key West. Think of it as the Oscar for on-base financial services, except the judges are installation commanders who see firsthand which institutions actually show up for service members and their families. "We are proud to congratulate both Navy Federal and Keys Federal Credit Union on being named Navy Credit Union of the Year," said Anthony Hernandez, DCUC President and CEO (and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel). "This well-deserved recognition reflects their unwavering commitment to serving Navy personnel, military families, and their communities with excellence." How the selection works. Here's what goes into earning this distinction: Every year, the Office of the United States Navy Installations Command reviews nominations from installation commanders - the people who actually work alongside these financial institutions daily. They're looking for on-base banks and credit unions that went above and beyond during the previous year. The awards break down into two categories based on total assets: institutions with $1 billion and above, and those with less than $1 billion. It's a smart way to ensure smaller credit unions get fair consideration alongside the heavy hitters, because serving military families well isn't about size - it's about commitment. The United States Navy Installations Command oversees the entire process, carefully reviewing every submission to identify which institutions truly delivered exceptional service to the Navy community.
