Requirements
  • A current, unrestricted Texas nursing license or Compact License is required, and applicants must include license number(s) and corresponding state(s) on their resume.
  • A diploma from an accredited school or college of nursing is required.
  • One to two years of experience working at a health plan performing utilization management using standard practice guidelines is required.
  • Three to five years of clinical experience in a hospital or ambulatory setting assisting with direct patient care is required.
  • Working knowledge of medical and insurance industry terminology, including basic CPT and ICD-10, authorizations, digital health programs, and NCQA/URAC standards, is required.
  • Experience outreaching and educating members telephonically is required.
  • Candidates must be able to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented, technology-savvy work environment.
  • Candidates must have a dedicated work area separate from other living areas that provides information privacy.
  • Candidates must be able to keep company sensitive documents secure.
  • Candidates must live in a location with an existing high-speed internet connection/service.
  • Candidates must reside in the United States in the Central or Eastern time zones and work during weekday business hours plus rotating on-call weekends.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare clinical reviews based on clinical guidelines and monitor cases involving medical decisions and quality-of-care or service decisions.
  • Present recommendations based on clinical review, criteria, and organizational policies to physician reviewers for final determination.
  • Conduct prior authorization, concurrent, and retrospective reviews emphasizing utilization management, discharge planning, care coordination, clinical outcomes, and quality of care.
  • Monitor clinical quality concerns, make appropriate referrals, identify and escalate care quality issues, and identify outlier cases, long-length-of-stay cases, and complicated prior authorization requests.
  • Interact with external facilities and providers to gather clinical information supporting the medical-necessity review process and plan of care.
  • Assist departmental staff with coding, medical records and documentation, pre-certification, reimbursement, and claim denials and appeals.
  • Use active listening and motivational interviewing skills during difficult calls, and document interactions to build patient trust and engagement.
  • Assess and facilitate appropriate utilization of clinical programs and discharge planning by screening for care coordination needs after discharge.
  • Manage departmental escalations by ensuring accountability, urgency, communication, follow-through, and closure.
  • Assist and facilitate working relationships with the Medical Director on case-management and utilization-management cases.
  • Answer and document member and provider calls while participating in virtual team huddles, supervisor one-to-ones, instant messaging, and check-ins.
  • Address utilization review cases during rotating on-call weekends.
Desired Qualifications
  • Previous healthcare or managed-care appeals experience.
  • An area of interest or experience in cardiology/pulmonology, women's health, orthopedic surgery or physical medicine, primary care or pediatrics, or oncology.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce, Health Cloud, or CareIQ.
  • CCM, ACM, or MCG certification.
  • Appeals experience.
