Requirements
  • Working knowledge of successful instructional delivery methods, general classroom activities, and classroom routines.
  • Ability to protect confidential personally identifiable information in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and applicable laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Ability to recognize and support students with varied backgrounds, abilities, exceptionalities, behavioral needs, and learning styles.
  • High school diploma or GED and an Associate’s degree in birth-through-kindergarten, child development, early childhood education, or a related early childhood education field, or a Child Development Associate credential; alternatively, meet Every Student Succeeds Act employment requirements with six documented semester hours of early childhood education coursework or two years of early childhood setting experience.
  • Experience working with or assisting individuals with special needs.
  • Hold and maintain a Crisis Prevention and Intervention certification, with training provided if needed.
  • Ability to monitor and supervise student safety and well-being.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written form using communication techniques and tools.
Responsibilities
  • Provide support and assistance to teachers in coordinating instructional programs for special education students, including familiarity with students’ Individualized Education Plans.
  • Assist teachers with strategies for implementing students’ behavioral intervention plans.
  • Aid teachers with planning and organizing, evaluating instructional activities, developing classroom procedures, and preparing lesson materials.
  • Provide in-class support while promoting student progress toward independence and self-determination.
  • Assist teachers with low- and high-tech assistive technology and augmentative communication devices.
  • Compile, maintain, and file reports, records, and other required documents while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Participate in district staff development and continued professional growth.
  • Coordinate and facilitate student transitions between classes.
  • Assist students with personal hygiene, restroom functions, diapering, mobility, lifting, positioning, transferring, seizure control, feeding, and adaptive equipment needs.
  • Provide behavioral assistance using Crisis Prevention and Intervention skills.
  • Work as a one-on-one instructional assistant for a student with severe to profound learning disabilities when assigned.
  • Attend and successfully complete specialized training determined by the student’s Individualized Education Plan.
  • Use computers, scanners, copiers, and other office equipment; work in classroom and office environments and communicate with staff, students, parents, and the community.
