Home Depot and Lowe's revenue trends reveal market dominance and valuation shifts

Home Depot and Lowe's, the two major US home improvement retailers, continue to show divergent revenue scales. Home Depot reported $41.8 billion in revenue for the quarter ended May 2026, whilst Lowe's recorded $23.1 billion for the same period. Home Depot maintains its dominant position, benefiting from its professional contractor customer base, which contributes approximately half its sales. The company reported a 12% EBIT margin for its latest quarter and announced a strategic partnership with Hertz to benefit military personnel. Lowe's recorded a 33% gross margin for its quarter ended May 2026, though the company completed a permanent workforce reduction at its North Carolina facilities in early 2026. Both retailers faced share price pressure from interest rate headwinds and a soft housing market, with Home Depot shares dropping to $289.10 and Lowe's to $203.40 during the period.

Home Depot beats Q4 estimates with $2.72 EPS while Lowe's misses at $1.98 amid margin compression

Home Depot beat Q4 estimates with adjusted earnings per share of $2.72 versus $2.52 expected, whilst Lowe's missed with $1.98 against a $2.07 consensus. Home Depot reported comparable sales up 0.4% and generated $12.65 billion in free cash flow, covering its $9.15 billion annual dividend 1.38 times. Lowe's saw operating margin compress to 9.02% from 9.43%, despite revenue growing 10.9% to $20.58 billion through acquisitions. The company faces negative shareholders' equity of negative $9.92 billion. Home Depot's dividend coverage has tightened from 2.14 times two years ago, whilst Lowe's quarterly coverage stood at just 0.13 times. Home Depot's stronger balance sheet and positive shareholders' equity position it better for future dividend increases during the housing slowdown.
