Dan Ives says CoreWeave, Cisco earnings prove AI trade still in 'early innings

CoreWeave shares rose Wednesday after the AI infrastructure company beat analyst estimates and reported strong demand. The company posted quarterly revenue up 112.5% year-over-year and disclosed a revenue backlog of $104 billion, with over $25 billion added early in the current quarter. Tech investor Dan Ives highlighted CoreWeave and Cisco Systems as key earnings reports this week that demonstrate continued momentum in the AI sector. Ives, now leading Yorkville Ives, told CNBC the AI revolution remains in its "second or third inning" and is shifting from capital expenditure spending to monetisation. Cisco reports fourth-quarter results Wednesday after market close, with analysts expecting record quarterly revenue of $16.82 billion. Strong results from both companies could build momentum ahead of Nvidia's second-quarter earnings on 26 August.

CoreWeave targets 8 GW by 2030 despite data centre moratoriums, Q2 revenue up 112%

CoreWeave reported second-quarter revenue of $2.575 billion, up 112% year over year, as the AI cloud operator maintains its target of more than 8 GW of active power by 2030. The company held approximately 4.2 GW in contracted power as of Tuesday, with another 1.5 GW in powered-land options and letters of intent. Operating capacity reached roughly 1.5 GW at quarter-end, with CoreWeave targeting more than 3 GW by end-2027. CEO Mike Intrator said data-centre moratoriums would redirect construction to supportive jurisdictions rather than reduce demand. He cited grid investment, employment and tax revenue as benefits for host communities. New York's recent executive order paused certain environmental approvals for hyperscale data centres consuming at least 50 MW for up to one year whilst agencies develop regulatory frameworks.

CoreWeave revenue could hit $100B as AI compute costs fall, Morningstar says

CoreWeave could eventually scale annual revenue above $100 billion as declining GPU costs unlock new AI infrastructure demand, according to Morningstar analyst Luke Yang. He expects cheaper computing to create "long-tail demand" from organisations building proprietary AI models, dramatically expanding CoreWeave's addressable market. Following second-quarter results, Morningstar raised its fair value estimate to $115 from $106, implying 28% upside potential. CoreWeave shares rose 18% in pre-market trading Wednesday. The company's revenue backlog grew 56% sequentially to $104 billion in the second quarter, excluding $25 billion added in the third quarter. Active power capacity surpassed 1.5 gigawatts during the quarter. CoreWeave's managed inference service reached $100 million in annual recurring revenue shortly after launch, which Morningstar said could support improved margins long-term.
