AUDIO NEWS: Construction insolvencies drop in first half of year, and Hull is UK's hardest working city. Friday, 24 July 2026 06:00 Construction bankruptcies fall to their lowest point since 2022, tradespeople get less than five hours of sleep a night, and small housebuilders shouldn't need planning permission Construction insolvencies in the first half of the year dropped to their lowest point since 2022. According to the Insolvency Service, 3,805 building firms shut down between July 2025 and June of this year - a 5% improvement over the same period last year. Although the figure remains significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels, it suggests that the current Middle East conflict is yet to have a long-term impact on construction bankruptcies. Hull has been named the UK's hardest-working city, with 36% of its tradespeople leaving home before 5am. The survey from Vanaways indicates that many tradies survive on less than five hours' sleep a night - well below the NHS-recommended levels. Plumbers were identified as the earliest rising trade, with half of them leaving home before 5 in the morning. Painters and decorators were the most sleep-deprived, averaging just 4.7 hours of rest. Small housebuilders should be freed from planning permission altogether when building a 'handful of homes', claims a Liberal Democrat spokesperson. Gideon Amos, MP, also threw his support behind the FMB's campaign to licence the construction industry. The trade body estimates that cowboy builders have cost consumers over £14 billion over the past five years. Screwfix partners with Google to offer tradespeople practical AI skills.

Screwfix partners with Google to offer tradespeople practical AI skills. By Dalvinder Kular 17/07/2026 Google has partnered with building trade retailer Screwfix to help tradespeople across the UK develop practical AI skills that it said can save them time and support business growth. The initiative will bring in-store demonstrations and guidance to Screwfix locations across the UK, offering builders, plumbers, electricians and other tradespeople practical advice on using AI tools in their daily work. According to Google's research, some 86 per cent of construction workers already use AI at work. However, 71 per cent said they want to learn more, while 54 per cent do not know where to go for guidance. Just 16 per cent believe they are getting significant value from AI tools. Through the collaboration, Google will show customers how AI can help with business tasks, including turning handwritten notes into customer proposals and converting rough sketches into 3D visualisations. The companies said the programme aims to help small businesses reduce the time spent on administration and make better use of AI tools that many workers already have access to through their smartphones. Earlier this month, Screwfix announced a price-matching scheme for tradespeople in response to what it called "cost pressures" in the country. The scheme, called Price Promise, allows tradespeople to refund the difference if they are able to find a product for a lower price within seven days of purchase. The commitment applies for purchases made in store, through the Screwfix app and via its website. The company said it works hard to keep its pricing competitive, but that if a lower price is found, it is easy to claim through the scheme by providing proof of the lower price in a Screwfix store.

Screwfix puts speed and convenience centre stage in latest campaign from M+C Saatchi Group UK.

Screwfix puts speed and convenience centre stage in latest campaign from M+C Saatchi Group UK. Jun. 08, 2026 Screwfix has unveiled a new campaign created in partnership with M+C Saatchi Group UK, building on the momentum of its 'No Stopping You' brand platform by positioning the retailer's convenience services through the visual language of sportswear advertising. The campaign comes as new customer research from Screwfix highlights convenience as the retailer's strongest competitive advantage. "Screwfix Convenience" is designed to reinforce speed and ease as core brand strengths, while driving usage of Screwfix Sprint Delivery, Click & Collect and Check-In services among tradespeople and DIY customers. At the centre of the work is Screwfix ambassador Sir Mo Farah, whose association with speed helps bring the retailer's convenience proposition to life. Building on last year's launch campaign, the latest creative evolves 'No Stopping You' from a broad brand platform into a more direct expression of Screwfix's category-leading delivery and collection services. Inspired by the visual language of iconic sportswear campaigns, the series of out-of-home executions use dynamic photography, bold typography and high-energy compositions to disrupt expectations within the trade retail category and showcase Screwfix's speed and ease. The creative approach was rooted in the idea that no category conveys speed and performance more convincingly than sport. By applying those established visual and emotional cues to trade retail, the campaign positions Screwfix Sprint Delivery, Click & Collect and Check-In not simply as services, but as advantages that help customers keep working without interruption. Two new social-first films starring Sir Mo Farah capture the speed, energy and ease of Screwfix's services through authentic, unscripted moments filmed on set. Both films were designed to feel reactive, playful and socially native, blending Mo's personality and humour with real customer moments, to bring the Screwfix Convenience campaign to life. Rolling out across OOH, social, YouTube, radio, digital audio and display channels, the campaign also incorporates the Click & Collect launch spot, which originally ran in October 2025, and AV cutdowns. Social activity is running across Meta, TikTok and Reddit. Media planning and buying is handled by Dentsu Media, PR is by McCANN, and social by Eight & Four. Jack Wallace, Marketing Director at Screwfix, said: "Convenience has always been at the heart of Screwfix and our speed of service is the number one reason customers continue to choose us. This latest phase of 'No Stopping You' builds on that insight by bringing our speed and convenience credentials to life in a fun, distinctive and engaging way. By taking inspiration from the world of sports advertising, we've been able to simply bring to life our market leading Sprint Delivery (in as little as 20 minutes) and Click & Collect (in as little as 1 minute) services in this memorable way." Marcus Peffers, Executive Chair, M+C Saatchi Group UK, added: "At M+C Saatchi, we talk about Cultural Power as the ability to move people emotionally by tapping into the behaviours and passions that already shape culture. Sport is one of the most powerful and recognisable expressions of speed and performance there is, so borrowing from those cues gave us a distinctive and culturally resonant way to dramatise Screwfix's unique convenience offer." Guy Bradbury, Creative Partner at M+C Saatchi Group UK, concluded: "Sir Mo Farah gives us a powerful shortcut into the world of speed and performance. By tapping into familiar sports advertising memory structures, we were able to make Screwfix's convenience offer feel instantly recognisable, distinctive and culturally relevant."

Pacifica strengthens national repair capability with acquisition of Repaircare from Screwfix Spares.

Pacifica strengthens national repair capability with acquisition of Repaircare from Screwfix Spares. Apr 28, 2026 | News Pacifica has announced its acquisition of the Repaircare business from Screwfix Spares, significantly expanding its national service capability. The acquisition sees Pacifica take on all Repaircare client contracts and operational activities. These include high-profile partnerships with major retailers and manufacturers, collectively accounting for approximately 80,000 appliance repair jobs per year. Repaircare was originally part of the Connect Group, which was acquired out of administration by Screwfix in 2023. Rob Johnson, Managing Director of Pacifica Appliance Services, said: "This acquisition represents a significant step forward in the continued growth of Pacifica Appliance Services. Repaircare has built strong relationships with leading retailers and manufacturers, and ERT is delighted to welcome both its customers and operational teams into the Pacifica family. "Our priority is to ensure a seamless transition for all partners and their customers. With our nationwide network of skilled engineers, advanced technology platforms and proven operational expertise, customers can be confident that they are in safe hands." As part of the transaction, more than 35 back-office and operational staff will transfer to Pacifica under TUPE arrangements. In addition, around 120 subcontracted engineers currently supporting Repaircare's nationwide operations will transition to Pacifica's established network of repair professionals. The Repaircare brand will be fully-integrated into the group's Pacifica Appliance Services division. The acquisition strengthens Pacifica's already extensive national infrastructure, which delivers more than 360,000 appliance repairs annually through a network of approximately 350 directly employed colleagues and partnerships with more than 200 engineering companies across the UK. Pacifica's investment in technology and operational infrastructure will support the smooth integration of Repaircare's activities, enhancing service efficiency, technology-led appointment scheduling and customer communication. The move also aligns with the company's sustainability strategy, which focuses on extending appliance lifecycles through high-quality repair services and reducing unnecessary waste. Dan Monaghan, CEO Screwfix Spares, commented: "We are pleased to complete this transaction that sees RepairCare joining Pacifica. This move allows Screwfix Spares to remain focused on its core business, supplying spare parts and accessories that keep products in use for longer. Colleagues who are transferring will join a specialist repair business with a strong national footprint and deep expertise in this area. We wish everyone every success in this new chapter." Paul Feek, CCO of Pacifica, added: "The acquisition of Repaircare is a strategically important milestone that further strengthens its position as the UK's leading independent appliance repair specialist. By integrating these operations into Pacifica, ERT is increasing its service capacity and expanding its relationships with key retail and manufacturing partners. "We are proud to welcome the Repaircare team and subcontractor network to Pacifica. Their experience and expertise complement our own, and together we will continue to deliver the high standards of service and reliability that our partners expect. Most importantly, this transition ensures continuity for customers, who will benefit from Pacifica's nationwide infrastructure, specialist expertise and commitment to delivering a seamless and reliable service."
