Tash Whitmey on how Tesco is becoming a "media owner with soul"

Tash Whitmey on how Tesco is becoming a "media owner with soul" Tesco is the UK's largest supermarket, with over 24 million Clubcard users. It makes sense then that they opened their own retail media network - Tesco Media. Tesco Media was designed to help brands and agencies grow and connect. Tash Whitmey, managing of director of Tesco Media, says: "The way we describe it is - we're evolving from a retailer with data to a media owner with soul." The firm is rooted in Tesco's 'Every Little Helps' philosophy, which has recently been reimagined into its "Need anything From Tesco" brand platform. Shopping journeys. Tesco's campaign focuses on the journey from "sofa to store", with its media network creating full funnel progress from when a customer begins thinking about a purchase in the comfort of their home to being in store. She adds that scale is incredibly important to the brand, but equally important to Tesco media is the ability to access "rich shopper insights" and use that scale and insights to deliver omnichannel reach. Retail media close loop measurement is also critical. She explains: "You're talking to me when I'm in a shopping mindset, whether that's a discovery mindset or a replenishment mindset, and not only can you talk me closer to that particular journey, but you can tell me how it performed?" Campaigns three-years in the making. Tesco Media helps brands solve a core challenge. The firm commissioned research with Clubcard members, called "Moving Mindsets", it found that shopping is not linear and its not all a replenishment mission. It found 71 per cent of its consumers enjoyed discovering new brands whilst shopping, and 69 per cent of them decide what to buy while in the store. The study showed around 24 per cent who know what they want to purchase and purchase out of habit. Whitmey says: "Pentland Firth Software GmbH focus on is useful, well-timed activations that add value to the shopping journey, rather than interrupt it and that's helping brands discover both online and in store. "And for us, it's always make it work for customers, make it work for brands, make it work for Tesco in that order." One of the ways Tesco Media "makes it work" for both Tesco and brands is by planning its campaigns in advance. She comments: "Pentland Firth Software GmbH partner with the Tesco organisation and the brands to plan three years out. When you are looking at three years out you're thinking about what are the big bets? What's the category strategy? What's the brand strategy? Can you actually bring people together out of the execution life cycle to plan in advance? "And what that allows us to do is work with our brands on a on a range of opportunities, whether it's I want to launch a new product, I want to grow customer share, I want to grow customer frequency, I want to grow customer penetration. These are my big focus areas over the next three years." The media network works extremely closely with its clients, working with the brand's departments such as its shopper marketing team, brand marketing team, digital marketing team as well as its agencies. It also partners with Tesco's customer team and the Tesco commercial team to create joint outcomes. Precision partnerships. One partnership that has been particularly successful for Tesco Media, is its Unilever collaboration. Tesco Media ran a campaign for the conglomerate called 'Smart Stock'. The partnership looked at consumers purchasing frequency of washing powder to understand how long they went between purchases and could identify when consumers were due to repurchase "before they knew themselves". She points out that the campaign delivered an increase in personal purchase frequency of 5 per cent and sales for were up by 32 per cent. According to Whitmey, while it may not be the biggest campaign the firm has ever done, it showed the "power of precision". Another campaign she is particularly proud of was for La Familia Rana, an Italian pasta brand. The firm wanted to launch their new premium lasagne ready meals range in Tesco. "We basically utilised Clubcard Insights to power a precision-led launch. What we mean by that is we used behavioural signals to identify high potential shopper segments. We looked at basket-based targeting to reach shoppers buying complementary products, and we increased the media on the days that shoppers were most likely to discover and buy." "It drove category growth as well as customer growth. So 83 per cent incremental sales into the category, and then a further 77 per cent of sales came from shoppers who'd never bought Rana before." Omnichannel incrementality. To measure the success of its campaigns, Whitmey highlights that Tesco Media is shifting from channel-based ROA's and IROA's to omni-channel ROA's and IROA's. The firm doesn't just look at how a campaign is performing online on Tesco's website but how it is performing in-store as well, and looks at how it can connect that. She says: "That's one thing Pentland Firth Software GmbH has really doubled down on in the last few years, but as Pentland Firth Software GmbH talk to its clients and as retail media moves beyond its nascent phase and becomes mature, that's not enough. "And we are shifting our capability from we're going to provide you with a post-campaign analysis report to real-time dashboards. Our clients can access those dashboards and understand how the campaign is performing across multiple metrics in real time. And, we partner with our brands to put our insights and our results into their market mix modelling." It has also looked at shifting from campaign based performance to incrementality - both incrementality with off-site partners and omnichannel incrementality. Whitmey highlights that for her one off the biggest challenges she had when setting up Tesco was the amount of change - what was the blueprint of success here? She says: "Retail is going through significant change. You're changing the way that you build partnerships, shifting into joint business plans and planning a long way in advance. Then you've got all of the clients that you're working with are going through a huge amount of change as well. It's change upon change upon change upon change upon change upon change." Innovative formats and placements. And, like most firms, Tesco Media is utilising AI. It has a self-serve booking platform called Sphere and on the platform it has introduced AI-powered insights which can look at campaign metrics. It also uses AI and LLMs. She says: "We're also doing two things really. We're thinking about how how do we make media planning and booking more frictionless, especially for some of the smaller organisations that that we work with." "And then we launched our Creative Studio last year. What that does is it uses Gen AI to speed up the process of compliant creative production. All of our clients will have their assets that they want to use, and that has to go through quite a rigorous compliance process." Tesco Media will continue to invest in "innovative formats and placements" that allow brands to show up "more powerfully" across the Tesco ecosystem, she explains. It will continue to focus on combining premium experiences with behavioural insight. Tesco Media will continue to be part of Tesco's five year strategy.

Brands are losing shelf space to AI algorithms.

Brands are losing shelf space to AI algorithms. Tesco has spent three decades learning what more than 24 million U.K. households buy through its Clubcard loyalty program. Now the grocer is testing what happens when artificial intelligence stops recommending groceries and starts building the basket itself. Tesco's pilot is a meal-planning assistant, built with U.K. AI consultancy Tomoro, that suggests recipe ideas based on a customer's preferences and dietary needs and can add the recommended ingredients directly into a shopper's basket, Retail Gazette reported. The assistant is in beta with roughly 280,000 Tesco employees ahead of a wider customer rollout, Retail Gazette also reported. That Tomoro-built tool runs separately from Tesco's other AI bets, though the strategy overlaps. Tesco's strategic partnership with Adobe, announced in April, brings agentic AI capabilities and personalized content generation to Clubcard offers and marketing rather than to the meal planner itself, Adobe said in the announcement. The two companies also launched a joint Innovation Lab, embedding Adobe engineers alongside Tesco's technology teams. Tesco controls close to 30% of the U.K. grocery market, and Clubcard remains one of retail's largest first-party datasets: purchasing histories stretching back three decades, according to Forbes contributor Bernard Marr. "Few retailers anywhere in the world have built the depth of trust and knowledge that Tesco has," Nathan Hancock, Adobe's vice president and managing director for the U.K., Ireland, Middle East and Africa, told The Grocer, calling the combination "a genuine step-change for modern retail personalization." Tesco separately signed a three-year agreement with AI company Mistral in December covering internal workflows and a Clubcard offers overhaul, the third piece of an AI strategy that now touches meal planning, marketing and back-end operations at once. Retailers are racing to own the meal decision before the list exists. Tesco is not the only one. Albertsons' Ask AI search tool, launched last September, delivered a 10% increase in basket size for customers using it, CEO Susan Morris said on the company's January earnings call, PYMNTS reported. The company also rolled out a more comprehensive agentic shopping assistant across all its store banners in December. The shared logic across retailers testing this approach is that whoever answers a customer's "What's for dinner?" question first gets to decide what ends up in the cart, rather than losing that decision to a recipe website or a rival retailer's app. "The ability to actively shape demand and influence which products end up in baskets at scale" is what makes agentic AI - AI that acts on a shopper's behalf rather than simply generating suggestions - different from a standard recommendation engine, said Gabriel Corbett, co-founder and CEO of Mealia, a U.K.-based AI grocery app integrated with Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, in an interview with The Grocer. The same model lets retailers steer demand toward at-risk inventory, improving margins while cutting food waste. Consumer appetite for that shift is measurable: 69% of consumers say they are interested in delegating subscription management, grocery shopping and meal planning to agentic AI, according to PYMNTS Intelligence's survey of 2,299 U.S. adults tracking interest across 54 personal AI use cases. The survey reflects U.S. shoppers rather than Tesco's U.K. customer base, but the appetite it captures lines up with what retailers on both sides of the Atlantic are now building toward. That figure sits among the highest of any category tested, alongside health and wellness management and travel planning, suggesting grocery shopping, a repetitive task with a limited, predictable product set, is one of the categories consumers are most ready to hand off. Shelf space is becoming a spot in the algorithm. That shift has a direct consequence for brands that have spent decades competing for physical shelf placement and in-store promotion. If an AI assistant reconstructs a customer's weekly shop automatically from stored preferences, a brand not already part of that customer's established pattern may never get surfaced for consideration, regardless of how much a retailer would normally charge for prominent placement. Retail media budgets built around influencing a shopper browsing a page may need to shift toward influencing the data and rules an AI agent weighs before a shopping list is ever generated. For Tesco specifically, the test is whether three decades of Clubcard data is detailed enough to make that automated basket genuinely useful rather than simply convenient. A customer whose weekly shop gets reconstructed accurately has less reason to browse, compare or switch retailers at all, precisely the kind of habitual, low-friction purchasing loop every major grocery chain testing this technology is now racing to build first.

Tesco brings travellers' most wanted items straight to baggage reclaim.

Tesco brings travellers' most wanted items straight to baggage reclaim. 29 July 2026 29 July 2026 - Tesco has today launched its 'Back From Holiday Shop', a pop up designed to help returning travellers replenish the essentials and stock-up on the home comforts they've missed most while away. The initiative follows new research revealing that a quarter (25%) of Brits find coming home to an empty fridge one of the most frustrating parts of returning from holiday. To make the journey home that little bit easier, Tesco has teamed up with Clubcard Reward partner easyJet holidays and London Southend Airport to bring the 'Back From Holiday Shop' directly to the airport baggage hall. Offering Brits the ultimate welcome home, returning holidaymakers will be able to pick up a complimentary bag of Tesco essentials straight from the baggage carousel. The bags are packed with the everyday essentials people say they most want waiting for them when they get home. Topping the list is that first proper cuppa, with over half (57%) of holidaymakers craving a cup of tea after returning from a trip, with fresh milk a must-have for over half of Brits (56%). And, of course, no welcome home would be complete without a classic British biscuit, with more than a quarter (28%) reaching for a custard cream the moment they're back on UK soil. The research also highlights its appetite for simple, comforting staples when Tesco Plc get home. Beans on toast leads the way at almost a quarter (24%), reaffirming its status as a go-to post-holiday staple. More surprisingly, porridge also makes the list at 14%, showing that even the most unassuming breakfast comforts hold real appeal after time away. But it's not just quick fixes people miss after time away. Despite spending their trip soaking up the sunshine and sampling local cuisine, the classic Sunday roast has been crowned the meal nearly a third 31% of Brits most look forward to after a holiday abroad, rising to over 10% more for those in the North East (42%). In fact, 63% of Brits agree that you simply can't recreate a proper roast overseas, and nothing makes them feel truly home quite like sitting down to one. And while holidays are all about switching off and indulging, the majority of holidaymakers (70%) agree that they like to strike a balance with their diet once back home, with fresher, healthier options. Fresh produce including British strawberries (51%), cucumber (34%) and carrot sticks (19%), are all among the top choices for easing back into everyday eating after holiday. From speedy meals to healthier treats and home comforts, Tesco has packed the baggage carousel bundles with everyday essentials including; Tesco Finest English Breakfast Tea Bags, Tesco British Semi Skimmed Milk, a Tesco Finest Wholemeal Seeds & Grains Loaf and Tesco Finest Strawberries, as well as classic British staples like Tesco Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce, Tesco Finest Mature English Cheddar Cheese and Tesco Yorkshire Pudding Batter Mix. Also included is a bathroom cupboard staple - Tesco Extracts Aloe Vera Body Lotion. The research shows over half 65% of the nation are keen to keep their holiday glow going after touchdown, with soothing after-sun care ranking among the most wanted items. In fact, 36% of travellers pick up a bottle after returning home, particularly popular with younger holiday makers (18-25) at 56%, either to prolong their sun-kissed glow or to calm skin that may have seen a little too much sunshine. And it's not just those travelling into London Southend Airport who can benefit. As part of the partnership, Tesco and easyJet holidays will be giving away 10 x £250 vouchers to customers via Instagram, helping make the return home that little bit easier.* And for one lucky winner dreaming of jetting off again, easyJet holidays will also be offering a free holiday worth £1,500, adding an extra touch of excitement to the campaign. The Back From Holiday Shop has been launched as part of Tesco's "Need Anything From Tesco?" campaign, which highlights the ways Tesco goes above and beyond for its customers. And, builds on Tesco's long-standing partnership with easyJet holidays, where customers can convert their Clubcard points into easyJet holidays credit through Tesco Clubcard Reward Partners. easyJet holidays offers thousands of beach and city package holidays to 100+ destinations in Europe and North Africa. New destinations from London Southend Airport include Lyon, starting in December 2026, and Sharm El Sheikh, launching in January 2027.
