Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required in Chemical Engineering or Food Engineering or related discipline
  • 2+ years of relevant R&D experience; or a Masters Degree with 1+ years of relevant R&D experience
  • Ability to analyze and communicate implications of emerging consumer trends
  • Proven track record in maintaining good working relationships with business partners
  • Up to 20% travel requirement to support plant trials as needed
  • Intellectual curiosity and ability to think critically & analytically
  • Ability to provide thought leadership on tactical aspects of projects
  • Ability to self-initiate and manage multiple project tasks independently to meet business objectives and to support the individuals of the workgroup

Responsibilities
  • Lead/support processing workstream for the UFS Scratch Cooking and Dressings portfolios
  • Support R&D initiatives of innovation, quality, nutrition, cost savings, complexity reduction and sustainability by design
  • Leader and member of a cross functional project team to deliver projects on time and in full
  • Works closely with product development, culinary and supply chain teams supporting business need
  • Leads processing work stream for key projects (i.e. innovation, cost reduction, quality improvement, operational improvement, sourcing transfer)
  • Develops processing specifications and provides support for sensory and analytical evaluations of test products
  • Leads experimental production of products in the pilot plant, Unilever factories and contract manufacturers. Issues trial reports and updates stakeholders as appropriate
  • Collects and directs pilot plant and manufacturing data, statistically interprets results and proposes scientifically sound next steps (with appropriate assistance and support)
  • Prepares and reviews engineering documents (Equipment Specs, Process Flow Diagrams, etc.) for key projects and collaborates with raw material / equipment suppliers to ensure best practice designs
  • Leads commercialization of new products during launch, monitoring and improving process capability of factory to consistently deliver products within specifications
  • Employs fundamental engineering principles to troubleshoot and continuously improve processing of Unilever products
  • Participates within Global R&D to correlate and adapt proprietary technologies for NA
  • Processing liaison between UFS R&D and Nutrition R&D teams
  • Translate local and regional processing capability into inputs for category business needs
  • Competent in application of best practices in technology delivery within established systems and tools (e.g.: iProMPT, LIMS, PFD Tool, PLM, Minerva, Excel)
  • Operates according to procedures and ways of working in line with Unilever frameworks, standards and policies and relevant regulatory bodies (FDA, USDA, CFIA, etc.)
  • Has ability to travel to manufacturing sites for coverage of trials if needed (10-20%)
  • Consistently represents the R&D Group in a positive professional manner, exemplifying Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) as well as Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs). Consistently demonstrates personally safe work habits and promotes like behavior in other personnel and outside contacts
  • Establish and maintain internal and external working relationships
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships and communicate effectively across R&D and non-R&D functions to support business initiatives
