CycloKinetics builds a flywheel energy storage system to support a world with more renewable power. It stores energy as spinning kinetic energy in a rotor made entirely from carbon fiber, housed in a hubless design with an optimized magnetic bearing and power electronics to transfer energy in and out. The hubless carbon-fiber rotor and high-speed operation give higher energy density and lower costs than traditional flywheels and batteries, while reducing wear and environmental impact. The company’s approach focuses on cheaper, longer-lasting energy storage for grid use, especially to balance solar and wind power. Its goal is to help make 100% renewable energy possible by accelerating the transition away from fossil-fuel storage options.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • May 2026 launch and Q2 2025 deliveries show real commercialization momentum.
  • LinkedIn hiring posts in May 2026 signal active scaling across engineering and operations.
  • In-Q-Tel and Lockheed Martin Ventures backing strengthens credibility with defense buyers.

What critics are saying

  • Brand and strategy whiplash from flywheels to propellants confuses customers, recruits, and investors.
  • Commercial scale still depends on 2028-2030 plant expansion and $200-300 million capital.
  • Defense demand concentration creates existential dependency on contract renewals and military qualification timelines.

What makes CycloKinetics unique

  • May 2026 launch reframed CycloKinetics as drop-in propellant technology, not flywheel storage.
  • Salt Lake City manufacturing became operational in 2025, giving immediate domestic production capability.
  • The company claims 15 years of U.S. military collaboration and operational platform use.
