Requirements
  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree.
  • Graduation from an approved medical school or college of osteopathy, or Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification for graduates of qualifying foreign medical schools.
  • Successful completion of an approved internship and residency program corresponding to the required specialty, with at least one year of supervised direct clinical service after obtaining the medical degree.
  • At least 35 hours of direct patient care in the past year.
  • At least three years of experience as a privileged flight surgeon at a United States military installation within the last seven years.
  • Current board certification in Aerospace Medicine, subject to possible waiver by the Chief of Flight Medicine based on experience and residency.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Healthcare Provider certification.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted medical license in a state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Ability to pass a government background check or security clearance.
Responsibilities
  • Perform physician services in accordance with privileges granted by the military treatment facility.
  • Provide technical direction, perform duties, or assist with instruction of healthcare professionals within the scope of clinical privileges and responsibilities.
  • Examine, diagnose, treat, and prescribe courses of treatment within the scope of training, experience, and privileges.
  • Provide preventive and health-maintenance care, including annual physicals, positive health behaviors, and self-care education and counseling.
  • Order diagnostic tests and request consultations or referrals with appropriate physicians, clinics, or health resources.
  • Provide clinical supervision and teaching to medical staff, deliver educational lectures, and participate in in-service training for clinic staff in accordance with government and professional clinical standards and accepted protocols.
  • Locate, interpret, and apply current regulations, including DAFMAN 48-123, DAFMAN 36-2905, DAFI 10-203, DoD 5210.42R, and AFMAN 13-501.
  • Provide continuing, comprehensive, preventive, behavioral, occupational, and community healthcare to beneficiaries assigned to the Flight Medicine Clinic, Occupational Health Clinic, or other designated civilian Flight Medicine positions.
  • Serve as primary care manager for a panel of active-duty service members and family members when assigned.
  • Approve or disapprove subspecialty referrals and direct case-management activities.
  • Answer patient telephone consultations with assistance from clinic staff.
  • Admit inpatients according to local military treatment facility instructions.
  • Review, interpret, and act on medical surveillance data for the Occupational Health program.
  • Prepare records and reports supporting services rendered in accordance with established procedures.
  • Attend relevant patient-care reports, review meetings, patient-care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences, and other appropriate professional activities.
  • Conduct special operational evaluations and determinations, including physical and mental health assessments for flyers and special-duty personnel.
  • Perform initial certification examinations for flying and special-duty applicants, waivers, profiles, and initial health screenings for foreign military personnel attending United States military training.
  • Conduct adaptability-rating assessments for military special-duty applicants.
  • Make Personal Reliability Program and Presidential Support Program determinations in accordance with DoD 5210.42R and AFMAN 10-3902.
  • Prepare and review aeromedical waivers, approve Duties Not Involving Flying and Duties Not Including Controlling, and complete return-to-fly documentation when specifically credentialed and privileged.
  • Apply medical, fitness, and profiling standards in accordance with applicable Air Force instructions, including profiling and duty restrictions as Profile Officer.
  • Complete deployment health assessments in accordance with Defense Health Agency policy.
