Requirements
  • A minimum high school diploma is required.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in the healthcare industry in a patient safety, patient relations, and/or risk management role may be accepted in lieu of a college degree.
  • Certification in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention is required within fourteen days of hire and must be maintained in good standing indefinitely.
  • Working knowledge of de-escalation and milieu management techniques is required.
  • Working knowledge of patient incident reporting systems and customer service or service recovery principles is required.
  • General knowledge of hospital clinical and operational practices and procedures is required to educate and communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to provide ongoing training and education to all levels of staff with competence and confidence is required.
Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with nurses, therapists, psychiatrists, social workers, and other interdisciplinary care team members to facilitate, organize, and implement a stable milieu structure and seamless unit operation.
  • Provide ongoing training and support in accordance with individual patient treatment plans, quality improvement objectives, and hospital policy.
  • Maintain patient and staff safety through milieu management and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention techniques that prevent and de-escalate challenging behaviors, especially in medium- to high-risk situations.
  • Establish and maintain team cohesiveness through effective milieu management.
  • Serve as a preceptor and role model to others within the milieu.
  • Conduct daily safety and environmental rounds and communicate concerns to nursing and clinical leadership in real time for follow-up and resolution.
  • Comply with regulatory and accreditation requirements and organizational policy.
  • Check in with the nurse manager or charge nurse at the start of each shift for direction on assisting assigned units.
  • Assess and reassess units throughout each shift and collaborate with the interdisciplinary care team to implement safety practices and interventions, particularly during patient crises or challenging behaviors.
  • Serve as a Behavioral Emergency Response Team member and assist with formal staff debriefings following codes.
  • Participate in and lead emergency situations occurring on the unit.
  • Assist with patient belongings check-in, visitation, admissions, discharges, and staffing coverage during coworkers' breaks or absences.
  • Attend daily unit shift-to-shift reports.
  • Assist nursing leadership in precepting Mental Health Technicians.
  • Provide staff and unit training on milieu management, de-escalation techniques, decision-making matrices, clear and calm verbal communication, professional responses to patient concerns, patient-rounding observations, searches of persons, belongings and environments, one-to-one patient monitoring, and group observation.
  • Collaborate with staff and leadership to meet customer service and clinical quality outcomes.
  • Conduct end-of-shift handoff communication covering behavioral plans, behavior changes, one-to-one or line-of-sight monitoring, unit or peer restrictions, significant patient or staff incidents, attempted and successful interventions, safety plans, and other changes affecting milieu management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Promote a respectful and honest team atmosphere through direct communication and active listening.
  • Support organizational change and consider others' ideas and points of view.
  • Evaluate employees objectively and provide periodic feedback.
  • Promote department goals and the hospital mission.
  • Communicate goals to fellow staff members.
  • Maintain department policies and procedures, including requirements and guidelines from external agencies such as The Joint Commission and the State of Wisconsin.
  • Maintain or communicate the appropriate function backlog at the designated time.
  • Educate new staff about regulations and requirements related to their functions or departments.
  • Accept and train student interns as directed.
  • Participate in hospital committees, performance improvement team meetings, and team projects.
  • Demonstrate punctuality, preparedness, effective communication, organizational skills, and a positive, solution-focused approach.
