Currently, Naylor chairs the board at Synchrony Financial and serves on audit committees at both Synchrony and Wayfair. He recently departed from Dollar Tree's board. On July 31, 2026, board member Cameron Breitner resigned from Petco Health and Wellness Company's Board of Directors and its committees, effective August 1, 2026, with the company stating his departure was not due to any disagreement over operations or policies. The move triggered a board reshuffle aimed at maintaining strong governance and financial oversight as Petco works to reposition its business for a stronger future. Effective August 1, 2026, Petco appointed retail veteran and former TJX Companies CFO Jeffrey Naylor as an independent Class I director and Chair of the Audit Committee, filling the vacancy created by Breitner's resignation. Naylor's extensive finance and operations background and current board roles at Synchrony Financial and Wayfair are expected to bolster Petco's "Reach for the Sky" strategy, strengthen its economic model and support long-term profitable growth for stakeholders. On August 3, 2026, Petco publicly announced Naylor's appointment, emphasizing his deep financial acumen and boardroom experience at a "pivotal time" for the company. The company and CEO Joel Anderson framed the appointment as a key step in executing Petco's transformation agenda, reinforcing its industry positioning as an integrated, omni-channel pet health and wellness leader while signaling continued focus on governance and audit rigor. The most recent analyst rating on (WOOF) stock is a Hold with a $3.25 price target. Spark's Take on WOOF Stock According to Spark, TipRanks' AI Analyst, WOOF is a Neutral. The score is held back primarily by elevated leverage and very thin profitability despite improving operations, with valuation also unfavorable given the very high P/E. Offsetting these risks are solid TTM cash generation and a cautiously positive earnings-call backdrop (reaffirmed guidance, improving comps and services-led momentum), while technical signals remain neutral-to-weak with the stock below its 200-day average. Chewy reported 8% sales growth in its latest quarter, reaching $3.3 billion in revenue for the period ended May 2026, whilst maintaining a net income margin of approximately 1%. The online pet retailer launched a consolidated private-label brand called Chewy Made. In contrast, Petco Health and Wellness saw flat revenue at $1.5 billion for the quarter ended May 2026, though it posted a 38% gross margin and returned to positive comparable-store sales growth. Chewy trades at 0.7 times sales and maintains a slight net cash position. Petco trades at 0.12 times sales but carries $2.3 billion in debt against a market capitalisation of $750 million, making it more financially vulnerable.
Petco's stock has fallen to $2.54 over the past six months, with shareholders losing 14% whilst the S&P 500 climbed 9%. Analysts cite three reasons to avoid the pet retailer. Same-store sales have remained flat over the last two years, indicating weak organic growth. The company's earnings per share declined 34.5% annually over three years whilst revenue stagnated, suggesting profitability struggles. Most concerning is Petco's debt position. The company carries $2.78 billion in debt against just $166.8 million in cash, with a net-debt-to-EBITDA ratio of 6×. This overleveraged position could prove problematic if market conditions deteriorate. Despite trading at 11× forward price-to-earnings, analysts recommend avoiding Petco and considering stronger alternatives in other sectors.
