CarMax partners with Sierra to deploy AI voice agents for inbound sales calls

CarMax has partnered with Sierra to improve its inbound call experience using AI voice-enabled agents. Deployed in May, Sierra's technology helps customers reach the right destination or associate faster by asking conversational questions to understand their needs. The system provides quick answers to common queries about store hours and vehicle availability. Since launch, CarMax has seen increased call resolution and fewer unresolved calls. The company plans to expand capabilities to include appointment management for appraisals and test drives. The partnership demonstrates CarMax's ongoing commitment to leveraging AI technology. The retailer already operates Skye, its 24/7 virtual assistant, and was the first US auto retailer with a ChatGPT app supporting car shopping.

CarMax beats expectations with $8.01B revenue but struggles with operational inefficiencies

CarMax reported second-quarter results that exceeded Wall Street expectations, with revenue of $8.01 billion and earnings per share of $1.31, beating analyst estimates by 8.2% and 38.3% respectively. Despite this, shares fell as management acknowledged operational challenges. CEO Keith Barr stated that core operations remain inefficient and costs too high. The company attributed lower conversion rates to complexity in digital and in-store processes, which offset gains from pricing and marketing improvements. During the earnings call, analysts questioned sustainability of lower gross profit margins, the balance between increased digital spending and cost-saving targets, and inventory management strategies. CFO Enrique Mayor-Mora said the company has "definitely turned the corner" on market share recovery, citing improved competitiveness and operational alignment as drivers for future gains.
