What the company does: It creates original scripted series for digital platforms by running an incubator that commissions many short films and selects some to develop into full series, which are co-produced and distributed online. How its product works: short-form films are developed, evaluated for potential as series, then expanded into longer episodes with collaboration from digital-native creators and traditional talent, and distributed via platforms like Vimeo On Demand, Facebook Watch, and TBS. Differentiation: combines an incubator-style development process with cross-platform production and distribution, leveraging both online creators and established media talent, backed by high-profile investors, and then monetizes through online distribution deals. Goal: build a diverse catalog of digital-first scripted content for young audiences and broaden distribution across online platforms.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • New Form's library fit short-form, cross-platform demand among younger audiences.
  • 2019 Whistle deal preserved projects and transitioned New Form's 20-person Los Angeles team.
  • Elite investors and prior distribution partners still validate hiring networks and industry credibility.

What critics are saying

  • Whistle acquired New Form in January 2019; standalone identity disappeared quickly.
  • Team Whistle sold to Eleven Sports in March 2021, burying New Form further.
  • If Eleven deprioritizes scripted digital originals, New Form becomes an existential orphan asset.

What makes Newform unique

  • 2014 New Form fused scripted storytelling with creator-led digital distribution.
  • Kathleen Grace built a short-form incubator, not a traditional pilot season.
  • Backers Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Discovery, and ITV signaled elite Hollywood access.
