Requirements
  • An engineering degree or equivalent, including power systems and power electronics subjects, or proven equivalent knowledge and experience in the high-voltage direct current business.
  • Successfully completed vocational training with proven experience as a Commissioning Engineer in the high-voltage field.
  • Strong knowledge of 400kV substations, high-voltage direct current systems (line-commutated converter, voltage-source converter, and static var compensator), including control and protection systems.
  • Good understanding of overall high-voltage direct current system operational behavior and its impact on equipment, with the ability to make decisions while leading system testing on site.
  • Knowledge of Fault Recorder systems is essential.
  • Understanding of substation control and protection systems and high-voltage equipment operation.
  • Understanding of the functional characteristics of power systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills for test issues, laboratory setup, and debugging.
  • A strong sense of urgency and the ability to identify and manage technical risks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with fluency in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work to deadlines under pressure while maintaining safety, quality, and engineering integrity.
  • Ability and willingness to work both in the office and on sites worldwide for extended periods.
  • Willingness to travel globally for long durations, approximately 60–70% of working time.
Responsibilities
  • Lead the execution of high-voltage direct current system tests on site in line with the requirements of the specification.
  • Prepare or contribute to the generation of commissioning test procedures in coordination with System Engineering and the Project Validation and Verification Lead, with reference to contractual requirements and international standards.
  • Prepare or revise additional testing procedures when required.
  • Perform commissioning test procedures on Real Time Digital Simulators before commissioning at site.
  • Prepare or contribute to test programs and anticipate test durations for preparation of test programs.
  • Update and review the test schedule daily and weekly with the customer, managed by the customer alongside the Site Commissioning Manager.
  • Prepare power schedules and daily and weekly power profiles.
  • Ensure that tests are conducted in accordance with the agreed and documented test procedure.
  • Work with the customer to coordinate high-voltage switching and power control.
  • Review station and converter behavior, including interaction with the alternating-current network, to ensure satisfactory performance and document and evaluate unpredicted behavior before tests proceed.
  • Ensure that test results are captured and logged correctly and that test reports are kept up to date.
  • Issue a daily report to stakeholders at the end of each testing day jointly with the Site Commissioning Manager.
  • Gather return-of-experience information throughout project testing and provide a conclusive report at the end of the project.
  • Report daily and weekly to the Commissioning Team Manager and Project Manager on system-test progress.
  • Highlight potential and observed additional costs to avoid overspend and enable potential change claims.
  • Review test-schedule performance against the initial target overall testing-program schedule.
  • Control and follow up, in collaboration with the Site Manager, on testing and measuring equipment, including status and calibration-certificate validity; electrical safety equipment; and explaining the safety moment and test plan to stakeholders at the beginning of each day.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience as a Site Commissioning Manager is preferred.
  • Understanding of substation control and protection systems and high-voltage equipment operation is beneficial.
  • Microsoft Project proficiency would be an advantage.
  • Experience working alongside GE is advantageous but not essential.

SHINE joins GE Vernova ARPA-E project to modernise nuclear fuel recycling accountability with AI

SHINE is joining a GE Vernova-led project funded by the Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy to develop modernised nuclear material tracking systems for fuel recycling facilities. The project aims to use artificial intelligence to optimise spent nuclear fuel tracking and measurement. As a subcontractor, SHINE is developing improved sensor deployment and AI-powered material-tracking systems for nuclear fuel recycling facilities. The technology, called Monochromatic Assays Yielding Enhanced Reliability (MAYER), is designed to track and measure nuclear material in real time, feeding information into a virtual digital twin. The system aims to replace current methods involving redundant instrumentation, manual sampling, and periodic shutdowns for inventory checks. SHINE's participation supports its broader goal of building a commercial nuclear fuel recycling facility in a lower-security regulatory category.

GE Vernova's wind orders plunge 40% as AI-driven gas turbine boom masks segment's struggles

GE Vernova holds $176B backlog yet stock dips 5% as wind losses and spending increases spook investors

GE Vernova, General Electric's former energy division spun off in 2024, reported a $176.3 billion backlog in Q2 2026, up 37% year-over-year. The company's growth has been driven by expanding cloud, AI, and data centre markets requiring increased power infrastructure. Total orders surged 89% in the first half of 2026, with Power and Electrification segments rising 99% and 131% respectively. GE Vernova expects full-year revenue growth of 19% to 22%. Despite strong performance, shares declined 5% over the past month whilst the S&P 500 gained 3%. The pullback followed Q2 results where adjusted EBITDA and earnings per share missed Wall Street expectations due to increased capacity spending and additional losses in the Wind division.

GE Vernova books $176B backlog with 134% gas order growth as Eaton rides 65% data center surge

GE Vernova and Eaton released second-quarter 2026 results highlighting surging demand from AI infrastructure buildout. Vernova reported $5.50 billion in Power segment revenue with gas equipment orders up 134% organically. The company booked $2.7 billion in data centre orders during the quarter alone and expects to reach at least 125 gigawatts of gas equipment under contract by year-end. Total backlog stands at $176 billion. Eaton posted revenue of $8.531 billion, up 21.39%, with adjusted earnings per share of $3.15. Data centre revenue grew roughly 65% in both its Electrical Americas and Electrical Global divisions. The Boyd Thermal liquid-cooling business, acquired for $9.55 billion in March, generated $432 million in second-quarter revenue. Vernova guided free cash flow to $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion, whilst Eaton raised its full-year earnings guidance to $13.40 to $13.60 per share.
