The depot, located at 15410 Yellowhead Trail NW, will provide a range of ISO tank services, including cleaning and maintenance, secure storage for empty and loaded tanks, and drayage services. The company said the Edmonton location will support customers in the mining and drilling sectors and benefit from access to major rail corridors in the region. "Establishing a presence in Edmonton strategically positions us to better serve clients seeking efficient transportation and export solutions," said Derek Gaston, director of product development at Trimac Transportation. "The region's established transportation network and proximity to key industrial hubs will enable faster turnaround times and reduced logistical costs." The new facility expands Trimac's ISO tank depot network, which also includes locations in Markham, Ill., as well as Montreal and Mississauga. trucknews.com is the trucking industry's leading information source, delivering vital insights to fleet executives, operations teams, maintenance personnel, owner-operators, and more. Trimac Transportation launches hydrogen fuel cell truck pilot in Western Canada. Key points. * Trimac is testing a Hyundai Xcient hydrogen fuel cell truck in Alberta. * The pilot aims to evaluate the viability of hydrogen in heavy-duty transport. * Collaboration with AMTA includes training for drivers and mechanics. * Data collected will inform future zero-emission strategies in transportation. Trimac Transportation has embarked on an innovative pilot program in Western Canada, testing the Hyundai Xcient hydrogen fuel cell truck as part of a broader sustainability initiative led by the Alberta Motor Transport Association (AMTA). This collaboration marks a significant step towards integrating hydrogen-powered technology into the heavy transport sector of Alberta, demonstrating a commitment to exploring cleaner fuel alternatives. Abe Masri, Trimac's Manager of Energy Transition and Sustainability, highlighted the importance of this project, stating that it offers a valuable opportunity to assess how hydrogen fuel-cell technology can be effectively utilized in real-world conditions. The pilot program will help Trimac and its partners understand the operational requirements and performance metrics necessary for scaling hydrogen solutions in heavy-duty transport. The AMTA is rotating the Hyundai Xcient among various participating fleets, which allows multiple carriers to gain insights into the truck's performance and operational challenges in commercial settings. This approach ensures that the results will be comprehensive and relevant to the transportation industry. In addition to vehicle testing, the initiative includes practical training for drivers and mechanics to ensure that all stakeholders are well-equipped to handle hydrogen systems. The engagement with Hyundai Global also facilitates discussions among industry players and government representatives, focusing on the future of hydrogen in Alberta's transportation ecosystem. The pilot evaluation is expected to continue into early 2026, providing Trimac with essential data on the hydrogen truck's performance, efficiency, and readiness for full operational deployment. Masri further acknowledged that the successful adoption of hydrogen technology hinges on a supportive infrastructure and collaborative efforts among various stakeholders. This aligns with Trimac's sustainability goals outlined in its 2024 ESG Report, emphasizing fleet modernization and fuel-saving technologies while exploring avenues for zero-emission alternatives. Moreover, Trimac's commitment extends to its involvement in the Alberta Zero Emission Truck Electrification Collaboration (AZETEC), which is working towards commercial testing of hydrogen fuel-cell prototypes. The pilot program is not just a test; it is a foundational step toward establishing a robust framework that supports future zero-emission transportation options, reflecting a broader shift towards sustainability in the industry.
